I need to replace this and was wondering if someone could maybe take a photo of theirs for reference and tell me the approximate depth of the original please.

I haven't measured exactly, but I would estimate that it was about 1.5 - 5cm thick, I already had the picture so I was not able to measure accurately, but I hope this helps you anyway though

I'm in the middle of a project to replace ours - I carefully peeled the 2 side pieces off and have cut paper templates for them. If you pm me your name & address I'l cut copies and post them to you. It should be 2cms thick. I haven't got as far as the centre one, still debating what to stick them on with, and whether to have the 'metal' side in contact with the bonnet (harder to stick shiny surfaces) or have it metal side showing and protecting the foam. Also unsure if it's sturdy enough to clip the wires onto - the originals had what felt like a sheet of very thin aluminium on the backs but it disintegrated so I can't re-use it. Anyone got any thoughts on that ?

Thank you so much for the info, that's great. I'll get looking for some the right depth. It's had the whole lot removed so its clean metal under there at present. I'm actually just looking at asking a local restorer to see if they have done it before. Perhaps supply it to them so it will be as near to the original as possible and not just whatever they buy. If they think they can do it neater....I might let them do it instead. The ones I've seen so far are self adhesive. I think I have read about 'fittings' so I guess the originals maybe had fittings but assume it just adheres to the bonnet (sticky side down, other side (whatever that may be) facing engine....with my beyond limited knowledge of course!

Our bonnets are made of fibreglass, so the thin sheet of metal is needed to stop radio interference. The cable is connected by a small crocodile clip. Hopefully yours are still there.

I believe another reason for the metal is that being plastic the bonnet can become statically charged.

What sort of size are the templates? I've replaced mine as it was worse than useless and kept blowing the foam dust into the cabin, usually just after I'd cleaned it
I've gone with a 6mm Butyl rubber version with the 'aluminium' side facing into the engine bay. I've also gone for full coverage rather than the three separate sections, partly because it was easier to do and partly because being 6mm it clears everything that the thicker foam is cut around. The Butyl is a lot denser than the foam so 6mm actually kill more noise and reflects more heat than the original anyway.
I'll take a photo shortly and upload it.

Not sure if I've done that right, but if I have this is it fitted. I've sliced the foil layer and re-attached the croc clips and secured them with aluminium tape to keep the secure.

The best way to do the images is to put them into a shared album. then click the photo, right click and select "copy image address" - you'll get a MUCH bigger link for the image which can be pasted in between the IMG tags.

I'll have to sort it at work tomorrow then. So if I do a shared album on my Google photos and share from there. I did start with a bigger link but I thought it looked WAY too big

If anyone wouldn't mind PMing me an image (save uploading elsewhere and whatnot) of the full under bonnet of an original one so that I can just see how close to the edges/which sections were and weren't done etc, that would be really great. I'd like to re-do it as close to how it was originally intended.

If you used the original thickness stuff, then yes, you'd probably need the cutouts. I've been looking at using Silent coat Buffler which is only 20mm thick, so may not need the cutouts.
(I got the bonnet out to take photos and measure the thickness of the foam, then got so obsessed with uploading the pictures, finding the thread and commenting, that I completely forgot to measure the thickness... )

shame on you for not having a piece of padding under bottom edge,
I have to confess lots of ours has fallen off over the years or turned to dust.
for info the SS1 is GRP and has nowt fancy glued in there for noise/radio suppresion (or anywhere) so if pushed I'd just put some foam on, without foil, or clean it all off, it can look quite clean under there (not ours)
