Wheel bearing question, after 'CT' (MOT in France)
Pass first time with Controle Technique on me 91' Turbo Auto with 144K!
A few advisory notices though.
Minor Corrosion to rear brake pipes.
Rear Discs nearly worn (Already aware of that)
Minor leak in P/steering system
Dipped-beam too low:shock:
Nail in a tyre
Minor play in F/N/S balljoint
Oil leak in engine (already aware & its minor, or normal for one with 144K!!)
AND
Excessive play in F/N/S wheel-bearing.
Now with this last point he asked me if it had been me that replaced the front discs (I did about two weeks ago). He then said that I had not tightened the bearing up when refitting & that it is part of 'the job'. Now in 'paynes' it does not mention anything about the bearings in the how-to replace discs.
In the bearings 'how-to' bit it says if play is excessive to replace.
So does anyone know if the bearings can be simply tightened. I guess, if yes it would be a simple case of wheel off (axle-stand) & tighten the big nut in the centre of hub?
Still, I'm chuffed to nuts with the pass!

Merci Esta
Just had a check of the 'suspect' movement on the N/S wheel.
Everything that I tourqued up when replacing brake discs is as tight as it should be. The disc retaining screw is tight too.
The wheel does wobble when wiggled at 6 oclock - 12 o'clock & at 3 o'clock- 9 o'clock which would suggest wheel bearings I think?
I did try to tighten the wheel-bearing nut in the centre of the hub, but it too was as tight as a tight thing.
Mr MOT man defo said it was something I'd not tightened when doing the discs, so I am a tad confused. That said he was happy to pass it for another two years without concern....................

Thanks John, thought I was losing the plot when 'MOT' man said is was something I'd done.
Over on the 'newly' re-opened VOC a suggestion was to leave the wheel on, take off the cover, then undo the hub-nut. Add some thread lock to the thread then replace the nut to just over the specified torque with engine idling & someone pressing hard on foot brake.
Suggesting this may save having to replace the bearing... sounds like good advice & worth a go to me? Also said N/S front bearing is a common failure?
What do you think?

Sounds like rubbish to me...but what do i know?
If the bearing is dead...its dead. Only if the wobble is due to the end of the driveshaft being denatured somehow could that solution do anything. Maybe i'm missing something.

Ta for that. Reckons it'll be a garage jobby. I've not done anything like that before.
Is it like shocks as in if you replace one side then you do the other as a matter of course?

I reckon the MOT tester is assuming you need to remove the hub nut to change the discs. Which is not true on our cars.
Bearing are a bugger to change. I attempted it myself but you need a hydraulic press to remove and replace them. Save yourself the bother and take it somewhere that does this sort of job all the time. It's not a lot of labour if you have the right tools.
Might as well get them to do the balljoint at the same time as it gets undone in the process of removing the stub axle carrier.
