Spammers

Some things just can't be placed elsewhere. Have you been speeding and got fined? Or spotted a nice new Volvo on the web somewhere? All non-480 messages can be posted in this part of the board.

If PhP are listening (which I'm aware they will not be) one way to limit em could be that any new members first 5 posts have to be approved by admin before theyre displayed?
That is possible now, I have a PHP forum of my own and I used to develop mods for the PHP community, but that was a few years ago now and the code I used to write in is obsolete.

What would be even better is to have all new members require moderator approval before being registered, this again is possible, just click a few buttons in the admin panel.

Even if it is spam, it does mean a whole lot of new posts on the forum! :P

They are all bastards :kill: every last one of them... :badmood:

Second time today i have been on and there are 2 or 3 of them spamming away while I am deleting their bloody spams they even spam on top of spams it is getting to the stage that they are so frequent that one or other of them must be on at any point in time.

If we cant get them barred from posting we might as well give the forum as its pointless I now can no longer access the forum from work during breaktimes in case some of the spam content triggers flags in the system (work in a school) the old spammers used to log on late at night or early in morn spam once and bugger off for the rest of the day now its almost 24 hours and the content is sexually explicit or porn.

Something really has to be done at admin level this is beyond a a joke now.

Probably they think, that because we have cars with a sporty character, we must also be interested in pornography :hopping:

Agree completely. It doesn't seem like anybody is running the forum anymore aside from the few mods who can't be expected to do everything themselves.

Sometimes you get a new member who is using an online translator to convert text to english or who is just semi literate and he/she gets removed as well so if it happened to you pm me to let me know you are genuine.

On the other hand one spammer could fool you at first glance that he was in the category above but when all 3 of his posts were identical he had to go

at 10 40 am Sunday the new posts list is spam free how long before the first one hits ?

this could be the new competition but you would have to be fast with your entries

It really is annoying. What I don't understand is; why is this the only forum I use which seems to suffer this? I thought spammers' ISP's were being blocked, but the same ones re-appear. What would be involved in setting up a new forum with better protection?

apparently only admins can do this - Daniel rarely comes onto the forum now and the other admin is preoccupied with personal matters so we are stuck with this situation. I must admit I am beginning to think as you do this is getting to the stage that it is not worth it.

Give me access to blocking these tinkers and they will be gone 4ever

Jim; it would be a terrible loss of so much help & knowledge if this forum folded. Any chance of you contacting Daniel via PM? Maybe he could give you the necessary permission to block these pests. I'm still curious to know why this is the only site I use which has this problem.

There is one other php board that I visit occasionally and that had a small amount of spam one day last week, but it only has a few hundred users

I see that admins are in the stage when this forum isn't their priority, can't we just buy this forum with backups from them?

I wouldn’t worry about that Jim, the posts themselves don’t have active content so as long as you don’t click on the pictures you shouldn’t get flagged.

That can be done but needs to be done at firewall level, only Gaz has access to that.

This has been mentioned before, I personally have never been for it. Currently the forum is hosted on a private server owned by Gaz, the benefit of this is we don’t pay for bandwidth usage or space.

This is funny place to post my first reply but here we go.

It appears as if the current anti-spam system, namely the Captcha plugin, in use on the forum is obsolete. It might be worth looking at upgrading the plug-in or switching to a human response style security measure which works well on one of the other forums I use (i.e. it asks you a question "Are you a robot?" - You type in "No"). Granted, this is assuming you are able to get hold of a sysadmin to carry out the work

so the only option left is what mods are doing now
maybe we could politely ask admins to sacrifice some time or give someone with right knowledge admin acess for limited time...

Forum back for .. how many hours.. and a payload of spam already posted. Why was it off line? What is it that people take down a forum without notification for the visitors who have to guess what's wrong and if it will come back.
