V40 2.0l turbo estate

Some things just can't be placed elsewhere. Have you been speeding and got fined? Or spotted a nice new Volvo on the web somewhere? All non-480 messages can be posted in this part of the board.

V40 2.0l turbo estate

Post by dragon » Tue Aug 31, 2004 9:16 am

Anyone got anything good or bad to say about V40s? Seriously looking at one they have at the garage down the road - 4 years old, not too many miles on the clock - going to have a look at it tonight, but does anyone have any real reasons
NOT to like the V40? (yeah, possibly would prefer a v70, but hey, none of those around at the moment)

(and yes, I quite possibly will be getting rid of the celebration to part fund a more sensible, yet still fun car)
Cheers!

I like 'em. :)

I have an S40, but I like the V40 shape too. I nearly got one, but in the end chose the S40 (I was 21!)

I test drove the 1.8 - this really is pointless having - it's really slow.
I had a 2.0 for 2 years, it is pretty fast - 140bhp, Although I didn't tend to drive it fast, for some reason, it just likes to glide along rather than be pushed.
Now I have a T4, which is mental, do not buy it unless you can really control your urges, otherwise you will lose your licence, it's like having a devil on your shoulder telling you to push it a bit more.!!
I have a clean licence as I tend to enjoy the acceleration up to the limit much more, as you can drive in it at 120mph and still not be fazed really.
It really is super super fast, but mine has uprated (factory fitted) suspension which is very very hard, and can feel uncomfortable to some.

I haven't tried it, but everyone says go for the 2.0 T (low-pressure turbo) 160bhp which has *enough* power (can you have 'enough power'?!) with the turbo giving it a bit of grunt at the lower end.

Hope that helps.

Well I prefer the V40 to the S40, they are just better in cornering. :) And 2.0T is a very lovely engine. It's quite quick. I'd go for it :D

i would go for a late v40.. (with the mitsubishi engine that is )

or if possible, since your used to some power, a turbo version.. like the car, but nothing tops a 480 turbo. Its just not the same.
luck,

Alas the V40T at a bargain price has gone, and noone around me seems to have another at the moment - only other V40 apart from 1.8 NAs was a TD variant - anyone got anything to say about V40TDs?

The search continues...

I always get a V40 Diesel when taking my car to the garage, they are brand new ones (usually with 100 - 2000 miles on the clock) but the engine is surprisingly good, very punchy and smooth.
I don't know if the older ones have different engines though.

You can really tell the difference when cornering, the front really digs in. must be real heavy!

Yeah, definately go try a T4 before you settle for a 2.0T.

Oh, and I solved a problem in my T4 (this is for rob really, sorry to bore everyone else)

Problem: I like to go fast :) but missus doesn't like the shopping being thrown around the boot :(
Solution: In an old accessories brochure, Volvo did a shopping hook boot thing, it attaches to the roof of the boot (salooon), and provides hooks to hang the shopping from, so when cornering fast, they simply sway!!

£12 - no nagging - bargain :D

They work just as well with takeaway bags - I can now get it home hot without getting it over the carpet.

Only problem now, is the 480 doesn't have them, back to driving slowly home from supermarket.

I agree, if you get a T4, get a cruisecontrol as well ;) As for the diesel, a TD is a pre 2000, isn't it? If so it's not worth it, I believe it's the same engine as in a 440/460. 90BHP is not enough for a V40. The newer ones are quite good, but aren't fast.

hehehe, this is the most hilarious "problem" i have ever read on this site..

you might as well drill hooks in the roof , and hang your kids in such an ikea like bag seat....  so they would be safe...

does it corner faster as a 480 turbo ?

whats the weight of that t4 thing ?

still can't understand "our" admin he shops around for something else as a 480 ? ;)
luck,

I haven't been in a 480 Turbo, so can't compare, but it's 1255kg I think, and with the uprated suspension and sticky pirelli's it has a serious amount of grip.

You're just being silly ... kid's can 'hang-on' for themselves

hmmm so it needs at least 113% if not more, tork than a 480 turbo of 1000 kg. to be compatitive.(this is for the weight comparison on accileration alone) Not mentioning other things like tyre load in corners etc. (which kills energy too) and aero dynamics. :!:

Hey, everyone has a right to be " silly "
luck,
JPF

Not sure how you got to 113%, but doesn't really matter, with 300Nm, it has 75% more torque than the 480 Turbo.

480 Turbo
120 bhp
175 Nm @ 3300 rpm
9s (0 - 62 mph)

S40 T4
200 bhp
300 Nm @ 2500 - 4000 rpm
6.7s (0 - 60 mph)

And that makes me :D

By the way, somebody asked on a thread somewhere about the psi of the T4 turbo, I just found out, it's 0.9 bar (13psi) as standard.
Unfortunately, no boost gauge in the T4, so no way of checking!
