Maintenence Announcement 19/06/05

Post by dragon » Sun Jun 19, 2005 1:58 pm

Just to let you know that the forum will be unavauilable for a short while this coming week, probably on Tuesday, maybe Wednesday, during the day. The server room that the server is in is undergoing some moves by our Network team, but they don't know exactly when they will be doing it, or how long it'll take. Shouldn't be more than 30 mins though.

On the plus side, I have been granted access to a totally different server room in another part of the country (did I mention this before), for the new server when that eventually goes in. This means I'll have 2 servers on 2 different very fast networks - meaning I could try and do some clever clustering type stuff so the 2 servers are in sync and whenever maintenence hap[pens to one, everyone else uses the second, which, if I get it working, means we won't ever lose connectivity ever again (well, unless the entire North of England has MAJOR problem) :)

OK, well people, life WILL go on, the good point is some of you might actually do some work at work

Would be quite an accomplishment if you manage to get the servers running in sync! Surely theres tons of info available on this, never done it myself...

we use loadrunner software that balances out demand across a server farm...could be used on just two, also, if one goes down, the other is used as hotback up so as you say gaz, theres an invisible outage to users.
not really sure how much administration is needed though as both/all servers are in use all the time.

There's lots of things that could be used, from a simple mysql replication to a full blown HA type setup. Whatever I decide, it needs to be a) Secure b) Be able to support nodes on different networks over different WAN links ( a lot of this sort of thing expects you to have nodes on the same subnet, or at the very least within the same LAN)

Once day I'll find time to play :)

At least my new CGI platform went live today for part of our userbase. Creating a _secure_ CGI and Shell system (oxymoron, I know), to sustain 500,000 users is not a small feat ;)
