ANNOUNCEMENT: Forum Down on 27/04/04

Post by dragon » Tue Apr 27, 2004 9:03 am

The forum was down from 02:45 - 10:55 GMT 27/04/04. The cause of this is unknown, the server just completely hung. There's nothing in the logs to suggest why this happened, so accept my apologies for the outage.

I need to recompile the kernel so that if it hangs for more than 15 mins, the server automatically reboots - this is how it was set up before I rebuilt it last month, so I shall implement that sometime this week, which will mean another small outage as the machine reboots, but I'll let you know when I decide to do that...

Message on behalf of Dragon

Apologies for the server crashing again, a mysterious kernel panic is the cause, most likely by some small difference in the kernel configuration. I shall be investigating rebuilding the kernel today/tonight as long as the server stays up long enough...

Well it's up again :)
If you continue to experience problems, maybe I could temporarily host the forum?

What a night... Because I didn't habe the tools at work to diagnose the problem with the server in depth, I took some spare ram (as I suspected this was at fault) and swapped it around a bit, but to no success, server still randomly crashed, so I decided to just take the server home and maybe make a new one (as I had my brother's old motherboard at home (which is actually a faster CPU than the server)), got home, built new server into shiney new industrial case, but I couldn't get anything out of it - BIOS beeps told me nothing, because it was just continual long beeps with pauses between, and no webpage tells me what 1-1-1 or 1-1-1-1 is on a Phoenix bios... Anyway, decided the super processor had died, which kind of left me stuck with no hardware. Decided to try known good ram from home in original server, then I noticed something: no matter what size DIMMs I put in (256, or 512MB), each slot only recognised it as a max of 128MB, so I suspect the motherboard is the cause of the random crashes. OK, so I need to buy new hardware for the server, but it's the wrong time of the month so I cannot afford, so what do I do? Can't just leave the forum down...

So I have actually got what was my old Linux box from home (which has what was at the time a £1500 motherboard in) and decided to use that - it's twin PII-400 instead of a uniprocessor PIII 933, and it's only got 384MB ram instead of 512MB, but I think it'll do the job until I decide what to do for the best in the long run.

So there we are, 3am finish and I have a server, drive to work at 7am to install and by 08:30, here we are again. Stable for the forseeable future (touches wood quickly)...

Thanks for your time and money
If it's just for the forum, I think this dual CPU-server will do its job.
The time is wrong by the way.

The bandwidth chart makes interesting reading, even after only a few hours of uptime ;)

Times are in BST, you can clearly see where you continental europeans take lunch, then
a slight lull, then where the UK people start taking their lunchtime!

Guess what everyone seems to do with their lunchtimes!

I'm also quite sure I didn't post my first reply in this thread at 5:37, and not even 6:37 or 7:37.

You guessed right. Well done with all the hard work you did this week.
How about a 480 trip with weekend to see the server? ;)
