Bright Head lights with Xenon bulbs

The Volvo 480 looks good as is, but if you have the desire to give it a more personal look you can find out what others did to their 480 and be inspired.

I tought xenon was more then just blue light, as said above.

I also have the Philips Vision Plus, and there working like a charm.
Really clear bright white light, would advise it to anyone.
Dont go out blinding people tho and adjust the hight, hate it when people are blinding me.

Thanks for the post Ben, that's cleared things up. I agree that the use of xenon in the marketing is misleading. I was thinking of changing the bulbs, but won't bother now.

I ordered from them last month for the T5 - I ordered in a Thursday at about 12:15 (lunchtime) - went into town for lunch, by the time I got back (an hour later), I'd been emailled saying the order had been processed and dispatched. Sure enough, there they were the next morning...

Also, you've been able to buy Xenon bulbs for YEARS, loong before HID stuff came about, so your assertion that marketting people have somehow stolen something from HID systems is plain wrong, AFAIK...

Stronger light bulbs problems

Post by 1256 » Wed Apr 12, 2006 6:40 pm

Hello people,

I'm new to the forum and this is my first post but i hope it will be worthy.

I had installed on my 89 480 es stronger bulbs as i've seen you people do, but to my dissapointment it didn't work for me. It wasn't a long time and my new bulbs melted down my switch for the short and long range lights and direction indicators.

I had to check up the whole wiring and relays to find out wich exactly melted.
And to tell you friends this is not the relays, fuses, cables or the head light switch but this combined swich for the ligths and indicators. you can see the whole line of power in the wiring diagrams book in the download section. and to my surprice when i opened the switch it all plastic and not metal at all and to tell you the truth i 'm surprised how it didn't go on fire or works at all even on normal lights.

Unortunatelly i had to ride home for a trip of 450 km when the short range lights went off so i had to drive on long range lights for short periods or no lights at all in order not to loose them too and get home.

It wasn't a nice experience so i hope nothing like that happens to any of you.

After that i bought a new switch, changed the old one, and made a home made scheme with two relays and a managing circuit with direct power feed from the battery an i still run those bulbs with no problems and i will never have for in the original circuit now runs only power to manage the switching on and off the rellays wich then give the power to the bulbs.

I tell you that now with the power comming directly from the battery the bulbs can really show what they can do and it's a day out there during the night driving.

The bulbs are "Narva 95/100 W head light bulbs" and they are really a meltdown if you put them directly :D

Sorry for english, punctual mystakes (no time for word spellcheck), grammar and bad weather :D

I'd be wary of putting Hotter bulbs in you DLR's

remember I melted one of my lenses when i ran my car with a dust cover over the nosecone/lights for a couple of minutes, a while back ( & they were brand new!!)

I guess due to lack of heat dissapation.

you may achieve similart temps if you use higher rated bulbs :?

Although I like the 480's shape I always disliked the disproportionate pop-up headlights.

Has anybody ever tried integrating the normal headlights in the smaller front clusters and use the pop-ups for putting in the lights that are only used when visibility is poor on secondary roads ("grootlicht") ?

Proper H.I.D's are far superior to xenon bulbs, if any of you have seen my lights you'll see what i mean.

If there is enough interest, i know a seller who is selling H.I.D kits for around £160, they can be fitted universally to any car as long as you know which bulb type you require.

480 is H4 so it's a common fitment and can be done easy enough.

I'll pop up a before and after video if you like?
