Re-Spray

The Volvo 480 looks good as is, but if you have the desire to give it a more personal look you can find out what others did to their 480 and be inspired.

Post by kevwlsn3 » Thu May 22, 2008 11:38 am

This has been probally asked a gazillion time but how much would i expect to pay for a respray?

not the insides aswell jsut the exterior, touch up a few knocks and respray it the origional colour.

i have a set of alloys and a brand new exhust ( everything apart form manifold, 1991 turbo dont need 1) but i am going to wait till i get it painted and ill post a few before and after pics :D

just need a rough idea how much it will be coz the cars not excatally big :)

I think the only answer you could give that is 'how long is a piece of string?'. Depends what process is used, how much paint, labour charges etc etc. The only way you'll find out in my opinion is to go to a few garages locally and find out. I remember a reputable (best in the area) Toyota garage in Lowestoft wanted nearly £500 to do the offside rear quarter and bottom half (bump strip down) on my Dad's 480 (some tool had hand-sprayed it before :x). But that was a mainstream garage. My Dad done the prep and a smaller garage re-sprayed it for £180 (ish).

You could do alot of the prep work yourself, filling, sanding etc to save money, but you'd be better to get the instructions from the place that are going to do it, as they'll only have to do it again if you muck up. Plus they might not do it then anyway-if you do the prep but they spray it, and in 4 weeks it goes funny, they may turn around and blame it on your prep!

Just get yourself to a few garages and ask, thats what i'd do. But be prepared for some hefty quotes!

Let us know how you get on :)

i have just this week had a quote for a full repsray for mine-a grand. Full same colour respray-so no interior having to be stripped.

The guy wouldnt let me do the prep work tho as he said he would rather do it himself so if anything went wrong it was under gaurantee-not bad in my opinion!

The bumpers, bonnet and nose cone only £350-£400

Apparently this is normal as paint and hardeners etc are all rising in costs. I am getting some more quotes this weekend, can post em here if you want. Will be adding them to my diary thread anyways.

Hope this helps, Esta ;)

you should budget forr around £1500 for a good respray. Just remember that if someone can see any overspray/join marks then its a crap job and you have been screwed.

The best way to avoid this from happening to have the process completed. This means a full mop finish after a couple of weeks, then a long as possible warranty. I know of people offer 5 years on any paint job

Don't use Baytrack Volvo in Cardiff either. I found a bill for £1200 for the nearside panels and door for 198 and when I took the rud strip off that side I was left with a nice edge in the laquer. They had left the rub strip on and resprayed over the old paint job!! Cracker-jacks!!

Theres a classic car guy near me who will sandblast the exterior and respray for roughly a grand depending on the paint you want, so ya, £1500 seems reasonable budget for a top class job.

It'd be worth getting the dreaded arches done at the same time.

Some kind of fine grit/ground slag mixture I think he said. He mumbles alot! I think he's probably got nerve damage from all the blasting he does.

Soda's a kind of slag isn't it? or am I thinking of talc.

Soda Blasting (as Martin said)

Removes paint without damaging the metalwork that shot blasting can dimple.

Approx £350-£500 for a small car.

(Classic & Sports Car Mag Aug-can get more info if anyone wishes! ;) )
