TD04 Conversion advice?

Post by volvo-tom » Fri May 20, 2011 9:55 pm

i know thers many threads on turbo conversions from T2's to T25 & 3's but just a simple question really, has anyone ever fitted the TD04 turbo from a subaru impreza? also apart from the obvious problems such as remapping, fabrication ect would such a swap require uprated injectors and engine internals to cope with the extra strain? any help much appreciated, cheers

The manufacturer is Mitsubishi right... till my knowledge none has fitted one on 480 lump...Mine (td05-16g) is still under the bed ;)
first one is clearance issue... which TD04 you have got... TD05 from first sight will almost be impossible to fit betwen engine bay and fire wall...

clerances should be measured first, adapter plate or new exaust manifold will be required, same things as putting other turbos new water, oiling lines etc.

The TD04-15T from a Saab 9000 Aero might be a good choice, as they have the T25 flange. I know people fit the Saab 9000 Garrett T25's to the 480 Turbo, memory is hazy but doesn't it fit onto the early Turbo exhaust manifold???

So if that fits so does Saab TD04-15T (on a 9000 the two turbos are interchangeable).

Certainly a step up Turbo-wise.

You would have to adjust the ECU mappings, but I can't see why it couldn't be done. Maybe a bit overkill, and you would have to adjust several other parts and pipes, but yep, should work.
The 850 T5 also uses a TD04, but HL-15G. Maybe the 13T from the 193HP softturbo would also be a good choice, not so demanding on the engine. The exhaust housings should be interchangeable, so if you source a dead one from a Saab, but with intact exhaust housing and a good one from a Volvo or Mistubishi 3000GT, you might be able to cobble a nice unit together for a small sum.

I envy you in the UK, over here in Germany the TUEV is quite strict on all kinds of manipulations regarding everything exhaust related. No metal racing cats for most of us *sniff*
