Exhaust ideas ?

Post by aibast » Fri Sep 28, 2007 11:19 am

This time I'm plannin on changeing my cars exhaust for more flowing one.
Here is a rough scetch of it. 2 bulges are 2 resonators and in the end I'm ading a small muffler/tip. Keeping to stock size on tubing. any one have any ideas or have tryd some ideas out?

ok so are you planning on doing away with the back box? or will that be attached to the end? Nice ideas putting the resonators in! :D

Do you need two resonators? The turbo is just a rotating silencer...

For a 200hp normal aspired engine you would need 2,25" diametre 2 absorbation silencers. 1 with 4-5l capcity and 1 at the end with 80-90l capacity.
But turbo's are differently.
I would put a aftermarket silencer only at the end of the exhaust system and point the exhaust tip the other way round (right instead of left)

Vins480T has motorcycle silencers at the back, but I dont if the rest is a straight pipe.

yeah, two resonators, had this same setup on my 700 series turbo. The exhaust note is then nice and smooth humming. The resonator will be straigth trough design ones and yes no more back box. Just a small small silencer in the end. It's going to be a 2,5" pipe also the downpipe will be new.

so these resonators ... are they just to increase the sound/noise, or do they also have proformance benifits?

I *think* it's just a sound improvement, but not 100%.

yes, they take down the sound levels by removing the pulsating from the exhaust gasses.

had some discussions in here and have now desided to make a 2,5" exhaust from the turbo to the end. Lambda will be relocated to the new downpipe - new lambda also. In the Cat place will be a one resonator, then over the axel in the stock location than turn to the right side. Instead of the stock backbox will be another resonator and then turn trough the rear bumper from the right side foglight location with a chromed tip. :)

Very nice! Make sure you get lots of photos! :D

Also, do you reckon these resonators would provide back pressure for NA engines? The reason being that I too am wanting to redesign my (already short!) exhaust to remove the silencer without losing back pressure!

We will see, how it will work. Still got to get the materials and find time - I have a lot of local Volvo club events planed. But as much as I have used this type resonators they work well. We will see about the back preassure and what it does t every day driving. As for N/A a proper tube exhaust is still the best way to get torque from the engine. Do that first.

David Vizard once published a formula to calculatie the hp loss due to backpressure. Im sure you can find that formula on the internet.

Just get rid off any restriction, but retain the gas velocity (no 3" exhaust  )

I made myself an exhaust pipe from downpipe to the end(side exit), using a catback pipe from a mitsu evo8(63mm) with 2 original resonators. Pics soon when will be mounted.

my wastegate actuator airline broke and the turbo just blew out of control, so busted my cars headgasget. So a bit more work to be done than just the exhaust.

Shouldn't the fuel cut saved the engine?
