Question for you richmod boys...

Post by 98kellrs » Fri Jan 26, 2007 6:25 pm

I've seen the 480 video with the bloke filming himself doing 130mph in his turbo, but I was wondering, does anyone know what their top speed is for a richmodded 480, or have an estimate?
Ryan.

I think around 140ish, really only restricted due to gearing/rev limiter.
The car will go strongly all the way up there if your clutch is up to it!

i calculated the theoretical top speed form gear ratios and the diameter of my taurus wheels, with the 6250rpm rev limit. It was 147mph i seem to remember.

The speedo hits 140 when you're going about 130, so that needs to be taken into account.

My 1987 480 ES K6 did true 212 kmph (my own calibrated speedometer) when I tried some time ago. That would be some 131 mph or so. It could probably have gone slightly faster yet, but I did not want to push it to the limit.

Not sure what modification the car has. Certainly lower and harder suspension, my guess is also the engine has been modified - it runs differently from all other 480s I know and on the dynamometer, I got 88kW easily, well above what a standard 1.7 should have.

mines modded but the clutch is std??. having the engine modded wont make it go any faster top end, it'll just get there quicker. mine topped out on a brunters track day at 132mph, GPS timin gear.
the only way to get a faster top end is larger wheels/tyres, changin the diff or increasin the rev range.
i'm lookin forward to seein how it does on 17's with a 7500 limit :)

yep damn that limit being in the 6's! i've seen 120+ indicated, and that was by no means the end of the car, just the end of my nerve. but as john points out, what the car is telling you and what you're doing are unlikely to be the same.

acceleration>top speed for me anyways... :D

I've had 130mph on the GPS and that wasn't anywhere near the rev limiter. So in my case, more power would mean a higher top speed. Not sure of the gear ratios of mine, but it's an 'N' reg, and I think Rich had just over 150 from his when it hit the limiter - his is also a late model, 'M' reg. Are the gearboxes that different from earlier ones?

Anyway - no matter what, you'll get to the end of the clock with the Rich mod, that's for sure! But if you're reaching 6202rpm (whatever the limit is) in 5th gear you could whack some larger wheels/tyres on there.

Excellent, I'd be happy with the 130/140mph average you're all giving! Im hoping that the 50kg+ I've taken out of the car will help me get there nice and quickly too! Just gotta save up for the conversion now I guess! :hopping:

mine was like brasco's pic. it used to get to about 5000 revs n be near 140mph on the clock but would get to the stop before the limiter kicked in. i was usin the later b18ft engine with m59 gearbox with 195/45/15's.
possibly the limiter is higher on some modded cars??

this was in the old days at 15psi ;)

Only in England could you possibly find someone who eats biscuits whilst doing over 100mph!

That looks like my car everytime I drive home to Somerset from Wales....There is a *private road* that joins the Toll Bridge to the M5 and I feel inclined to rag the cars tits off. MPG REALLY REALLY suffers though :) The road is always empoty and you can see to the end so basically it's my own personal race track ;)

I tried to record 100 - 140 speeds on my phone but it is difficult and I'm not stupid enough to try any way of holding my phone that doesnt involve both hands on the wheel!
