Late mirror cover replacement. 56k go do something else!
Well, to follow on from my headlining post, I thought a mirror cover replacement how-to might be of some use. Mine were badly damaged and the housings were fairly loose.
So to start:
Pull the mirror glass away from the mirror to release it from its mounting. (its clipped into place) Then remove the two wires for the heated mirror
Then unscrew the mirror motor held in place with three screws (this is not essential but allows better access and I was changing my motor anyway)
In this case, i needed to remove the motor completly so I had to unlip the connector
You can now see the retaining screws for the back trim (the black part) and the clips for the front trim (white part)
Remove the trim by unscrewing the 4 screws. (you may need a short screwdriver for this as the quarter window gets in the way) My mirror trim had two broken tabs.
Release the front trim by un-hooking the plastic tabs. My mirror cover was fecked! New cover shown as a comparison.
When refitting the mirror cover, I lubricated the clips with some silicone spray. This made refitting much easier.
Refitting is reversal of removal blah blah blah....

Just a quick question about getting the mirror glass away from the mirror. You said:

I'm having difficulty prising the mirror off. Is there a knack to it without breaking it? I'm close to breaking it I think!
Thanks for any tips.

Silver....I'm not sure theres a knack as it were: you can't get in there to lubricate the clips you can see in the above photos so I think the best you can do is a screwdriver wrapped in a rag and try to release one clip at once?

I need to free off the fold back part and I'm worried that I break the whole thing so I think taking the glass out will allow me access to the spring/pivot to 'lubricate/free
are there four wee clips that hold the mirror glass onto the holder, or is the glass bonded onto a plastic carrier so reasonably 'robust? i've broken a mirror glass on the SS1 trying to prise it off

If memory serves me correctly the mirror glass is bonded onto the plastic backing. Dont worry if it all goes pear shaped I will send you a replacement late mirror glass FOC

job done, sodding nightmare getting the mirror to turn back and fore, ended up with a junior hacksaw to carefully cut the pivot tube along it's axis to let it drop down slightly in diameter so allowing movement!
