At least you have protected the bare metal and the silver/blue combo is not such a poke in they as it could have been

You know you can get paint mixed up quite cheaply and easily in a rattle can? Maybe treat that silver as a primer, rub it down and but the correct blue on.

Is it too late to rub that off the car with a solvent like petrol?

Re: 1988 Volvo 480 ES - A New Era Dawns: One year on
I mixed up a halfords rattlecan to the paint code quite early on but the colour was awful. I don't mind the silver as I know it's just a temporary fix. With the bumper I was worried about permanent marking, but it's ok

I ordered 'special' mix spray cans from tinternet, seemed to be a VERY good match for both cars.
meatllic 322 for the Celebration
solid red for the other one, time will tell how well it doesn't fade
seemed reasonable priced . ..

Were those 'normal' spray paints or are they ones that need laquer? Either way I don't feel confident doing it myself, especially with having no indoor clean area to do it inAlan 480 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 27, 2020 8:57 pmI ordered 'special' mix spray cans from tinternet, seemed to be a VERY good match for both cars.

Re: 1988 Volvo 480 ES - A New Era Dawns: One year on
So I suppose this is a bit late, but better late than never
On Friday I took my much anticipated 2nd driving test in the Wedge, and somehow managed to pass with a clean sheet of faults. My father said that the car almost certainly had an impact, but I am glad it is past me now. The car is now due to go into the bodyshop soon, I've been given a quote for £1800 to get it tidied up professionally, which I am sure will be worth it
In the meantime, I shall break from convention and dare to reveal my face to the internet, but I suppose it's a distance shot somewhat so that's alright, we are all slaved to data anyway

Just remember (as my instructor told me)
You've a licence to learn more, not to drive.
But congratulations all the same!

Yes very wise, in fact I am feeling more nervous as I got no faults than I would have done if it wasn't perfect...

Congratulations!!
Can't be many people taking their driving test in a 480 these days.
Picking up on Jeff's theme, now you've demonstrated that you have the basic skills, you are now let loose to go off and learn how to drive. Never ever stop learning from your experiences - old fogies like me, with hundreds of thousands of miles behind them, still encounter new situations to try the reactions and abilities, and provide another bit of learning to put in the experience bank. If you assume all the other drivers around you are going to fo something idiotic in the next few seconds, and try to be ready for that , you won't go far wrong...
Anyway, fatherly talk over!! Ben, I wish you many many happy miles driving your 480!

Re: 1988 Volvo 480 ES - A New Era Dawns: One year on
I wish!
To give you some perspective, I was only able to afford my first one in 1991 because - very wrongly for me as I soon learned - I was working with a City law firm and being paid the usual stupid money for the time.
The first Volvo showroom I visited to look at a used 480 simply didn't believe I was a potential buyer: they lost a sale to another dealership who took me seriously, after asking what I did for a living.
So, I was 22, the 480 (3 years old) cost me £7000 to buy and £1200 to insure...
So enjoy the opportunity that the age of a 480 in 2020 brings!

Well I was offered 5k to insure it (by offered I mean invited to pay) so we will see, but I am sure it will all be finedcwalker wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 6:09 pmI wish!

I call it 'defensive driving' as NO air-bags /ABS etc on a Reliant (of any type) and when you are eye level to the wheel nuts of trucks & buses . . .
anyhow,
well done on getting a'ticket',
just don't get any more (of the speeding type)

You'll love that photo when you're older. Make sure you print it out to keep and look back on.
Your first 480....there will be more.
Any luck trying for insurance 25 days ahead on the comparison sites?

yes actually I tried for starting on the 30th October on Compare the Market and for the Rover and the Volvo separately it was around 1500 quid. we are having a meeting with Natwest on friday to see if we can roll car insurance with the house insurance and get an overall better deal

Oh that sounds a lot less offensive! Great news. Well, greater news than £5k!MisterH wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 7:20 pmyes actually I tried for starting on the 30th October on Compare the Market and for the Rover and the Volvo separately it was around 1500 quid. we are having a meeting with Natwest on friday to see if we can roll car insurance with the house insurance and get an overall better deal
