Car almost stolen :(
I got home from work today to find that my car had been broken into, and someone had tried to steal it.
The door has been bent as per the breaking into a 480 thread (um.. Maybe that wasn't such a good idea, can it be deleted?).
The ignition switch has been mangled, looks like a slide hammer or some such thing. The lock part has had the plastic bits removed and someone seems to have tried to pull the lock part out.
Horns disconnected.
Carpet removed from ECU area.
Nothing is missing thankfully, although the ECU may have been about to leave.
Talking to Chris, and he agrees that it's someone who knows what they are after.
Hm......
Looks likr I had best get an alarm, and tracker then
A pissed off Richard
Some pictures of the parts of the lock:

Things aren't going well are they? First the turbo sabotage now this. Do you think they two things could be related? Have you contacted the police? There's always a slim chance that fingerprints were left somewhere...
Hope it doesn't take too much to get you car sorted out again.

OMG! What wankers! Some people really should be shot
Do you reckon the alarm went off hence the horn being disconnected? Any idea if it has anything to do with the turbo incident?

Yes I did contact the police.. They helpfully gave me an incident number and said they are far too busy to be interested in my car, since it's not actualy been stolen.
I don't think the two are related, that would be just a little paranoid.
I'm guessing this is all down to giving people my address to be able to tune ECUs for them. It would seem that you can't trust anyone these days.
This is so sad it's untrue. It's likley that the person responsible is reading this. Let me say that it's going to be very hard to resist taking some sort of action if I find out who did this, either via the police, or....
For F!*KS sake I'm trying to do ECU mods at a resonable price, and this is the thanks I get?

Not good mate. I hate to think that someone might be abusing the openness of this forum. 480s are pretty hard to nick, but I'd have thought you'd have some sort of high security steering lock cover of some sort, given you cannot keep your uber modded car in a garage
Good job they didn't get it, bit as already said, they seemed to know what they wanted, the car, and failing that, the uber ecus? I wouldn't be suprised if they tried it again...
Sorry to hear all of this
Shame my auction ended the other night, else I'd have given you a camera and PC card for you to set up some monitoring...
Whats this about turbo sabotage? Did I miss a post?

Sorry to hear you've been vandalised Rich... makes your blood boil when some arseholes have no respect for your pride and joy, whatever car it may be, not to mention your time and skill spent on it... Hope it doesn't take too much to sort the car out.
I don't think the police will be able (willing?) to do much unless some other crimes are linked... at least when my last car was vandalised they took evidence & prints but I never heard anything after that...
And if you catch em' chop their fingers off

I
'm amazed that these nobheads went so far.. especially for what at best would be a joyride..... such a massive risk to try and sell this car on, because we are legion... ... ok, lots of potential buyers are on this site and we'd shop them.

Sorry to hear. They had to know what's in your car because it not a typical mecedress or BMW that you can fairly quick sell.

Thanks for the offers of help. Very nice of you all Many thanks!
It's sorted though. I have a complete set of new locks (spares car), plus a transponder imobiliser, both will be fitted tomorow.
Steps have been taken to protect the car for the night, but I can't say what. I'll let it be a surprise to anyone stupid enough to try it.
I also have an infrared sensitive camera that will be set up, and a capture card. There is already security lighting, that is active during the night.
Pictures of the turbo oil feed pipe, where it was crimped over, for those who missed it.
The camera, just in case anyone thinks I am joking.

Sorry about that, I was a bit annoyed at the time, please don't think it was directed at everyone. It's not, only at one person, that being the one who proly got my address by asking about ECU mods, or from someone who did (either knowingly or not).Brasco wrote:To be fair, most of us on the forum think you are an absolute star, that's the thanks you get.rpruen wrote:For F!*KS sake I'm trying to do ECU mods at a resonable price, and this is the thanks I get?
Whoever it was knew exactly what they where trying to get. That is very clear, as Dragon says. The whole car, or if that isn't possible then the ECUs.
The fact that nothing more than the ignition switch was broken makes me think it was a 480 fan rather than a random car thief.

Poss idea: I understand that these b*stards didn't smash the windows? But to deter less 'knowledgable' thiefs how about covering the windows in that film rally cars use? I've only ever heard it mentioned but apparently its to stop trees/walls/ anything coming through the windows. Another idea is strong (clear) perspex windows?
Probably a waste of time (and money), but may help?

I think if someone wants the car badly enough they will take it. I can do things to make it difficult and / or ensure that they get caught. I can look at some options tomorow, when things have settled down a bit.
For the time being the car is fairly well protected.
I'll look into all your sugestions though. Thanks.
