Cost of spares on E-bay.

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Cost of spares on E-bay.

Post by Brasco » Thu Mar 31, 2005 11:12 pm

What gives?

You think on e-bay you can pick up the odd bargain. But when it comes to spares for the 480.... it's madness. We all know the one about the seatbelt arms that go for twice the new price, but I saw the half-leather trim on at the moment and thought, that'd be nice. It's 40 snots for delivery, bear in mind it's probably quite old and worn I thought, I'll go and extra £40 max.

OK, you might think £80 for second hand car seats is cheap, but hey, I'm on e-bay, I'm looking for cheap.

I checked out the price (and the auction hadn't finished) to see it was at £142 (£182 incl. delivery). Dammit what happened to the bargains?!?! There's still 2 days left on them as well!

You'd think that someone with 612 feedback would know better!

That is unless they're a friend of the seller and are just bumping up the price  but I'm sure they wouldn't be that dishonest!

I guess a fair number of people buying 480 bits are members here. Maybe a buying cartel could be organised to keep prices down

I just bid a boot load cover up to 20 quid before calling it a day. If the winner (auvs) is a member here, I'm sure we could have to some arrangment and auvs could have taken the item for a fiver instead.

Do you know how much new leather trim costs for ONLY the 2 front seats of a 480?
It is somewhere around 2000 (two thousand) Euros.
Outrageous!
So I think picking it up on eBay for less than 2-300 Euros could be a bargain. Well, only if you want original. Car upholsterers can make it new for not much more money...

Clears it all up.

I posted it because I though it was odd how someone with 600+ feedbacks was acting like a new ebayer.

(bidding so far before the end of auction)

I bet Julie wishes she knew you in person and could have made an offer before the auction started.

thanks for clearing the situation up :)

I'd personally like to see ebay introduce a blocker that stops people bidding in the last 10 mins of an auction if they haven't already got a bid existing on the item.

Last minute sniping from total newcomers to an auction isn't big, clever or the "seasoned ebayer" way of doing things to be honest. All in my humble opinion of course.

And I'm a bit hippocritical there as I did do a last 8 second newbie entry on my new phone on Thursday, but that was a one off - I like to place at least one bid on an auction fairly early on, just to register an interest - I kind of feel it's gentlemanly, whereas last min n00b bidding is yob like, and shill bidding is scum-of-the-earth practice.

There's nothing worse as a seller to have only a few bids for the entire duration of your auction, then to have a few last min bids (because everyone chose to do it and 60% of them get frozen out I bet by overloading the Ebay CGI, meaning you get less (often a lot less) than you might otherwise have got. OK that may not matter if you sell on ebay a lot, but for me, who just sells the occasional item on ebay, and usually only because I need money, it's a real bitch and starting to make ebay quite unattractive nowadays.

Anyway thats my random musings on the subject

U do have a point, although at the end of the day u have to put in your maximum bid. So no matter what time u place a bid, whoever has the highest maximum bid wins. End of story. As a seller obviously u want to get the most for your item....well use a reserve then! As a buyer u want to pay the least for your item....bid at the last minute!

Someone could always set up a rival website that uses a sealed maximum bid system rather than time limit. Whoever bids the most gets the item. Or of course you could take your old items down the skip and actually pay to get rid of them...come on....we all know ebay has donw wonders for us all!

The problem I have with eBay auctions is when they have a reserve. It looks really unattractive in the auction because you just don’t know how much is enough, and most of the sellers won’t tell you the reserve. I don’t use reserves or if I do its very reluctantly, if people snipe on a reserve auction its highly unlikely it will reach the reserve.

Suppose so. It just seems a little wierd to have a load of people from forum, buying and selling 480 spares from each other, but paying commision to eBay to do it.
