It's not cheap to own a 480

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

It's not cheap to own a 480

Post by Patrick 480 Turbo » Sat Oct 09, 2004 5:48 pm

 I' very angry. Two weeks ago my clutch began to slip so there had to be a new one and on wednesday the gearbox broke. So my 480 costed me 2000€ in the last 2 weeks. But I love my 480 that much so I hope it will be cheaper in the next months

add all the costs up and treat it like heat and light bills ( for home )
YES it can be pricey but it sure beats living in the dark ;)

don't talk about 480 expenses, nothing on my ES has been changed and she was born in 1989, so I guess a couple of things'll need changing :badmood: specially as I've done more miles in it in a month than my dad in a year when he drove it :?
I think I might go for a diesel thing for driving around and only use the 480 for weekends...

480's aren't "that" bad, think of the savings in fuel economy (especially when they are off the road being fixed). A lotus for example would cost twice as much to run.
For the type of car they are the 480 is a cheap sports car.

yeah, ok, but 1000miles in about 3 weeks is too much for me, and I can't keep up with the petrol cost, specially as Ive got a rather heavy right foot...

I've been known to cover 1000miles in a long weekend when I'm in New Zealand. Fuel is cheap there though, which is fortunate because I drove a 3.5L V8 everyday.

That's not so much.

In the last two weeks I have done almost 4000 miles

That is in no way normal though.

According to a friend of mine this is the definition of a sailing boat:
"A hole in the water in which you throw a lot of money"

The same applies to a 480??

Suppose it depends on how good you get to know your car and fix yourself. My new gearbox was £30!! With a lot of hours spent...

I know the car very well, it my second 4xx since my 440 and I also had a 480 which I deconstructed. The problem is that I need the car to get to work and I have to work till 10 pm so it'S nearly impossible to go by public means of transport there and I had enough from dad's citroen ax diesel after 2 days  . The car was at my volvodealer and he had a gearbox so he got the job and fixed it in 6 hours(he said it will last for some days because he had so much cars there but then he called on the same day that th car is finished)

6 hours is about right for a gearbox change. If you don't have a ramp anyway.

My record on the 480 is 2300 miles in 6 days. 3 of these days were down the german autobahn doing flat out speeds. Last year between MOT's i managed to clock up 27,000 miles.

I miss my 480 so much it hurts. She is currently getting her cancer sorted.

about 2 years ago, 3 times a month from the of South France to Amsterdam, up and down. = 3 x 2800 km 8400 km every 3 weeks. And that for a period of 6 months.

It was fun to drive on the french toll roads at night.
