UK insurance

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

UK insurance

Post by Ettore Bugatti » Sat Jul 23, 2011 1:30 pm

Im sure it has been covered overhere, but since my Google-Fu is a bit low on the moment. I just asked it again.

What are good, reliable and affordable insurancers for a Volvo 480 in the UK?

Cheers,
Richard

Other than the usual 'compare the comparison sites', don't forget:

a) Swift Cover. They only ask about claims in the past three years (it's usually five).

b) Brokers. Have a look on vpcuk.org - they have a deal with Chris Knott Insurance, who will usually match or beat comparison sites. There is a code to quote over the phone.

c) Classic insurance. If you don't do many miles, see if you can go with a classic specialist.

Finally, don't fret too much over fully comp. Currently the cars are going for well under a grand, so it's not worth (in my opinion) paying, say, £400 insurance with a £250 excess should the worst happen when the car is likely to be £500 at best.

Some employers will offer discounts to their employees that are sometimes worth exploring. Also you may find that if you have home insurance with some companies you'll get loyalty discounts with car insurance.

Unfortunately with insurance there isn't a "these are cheap" for every situation. All you can do is shop around!

I'm currently trying to sort out insurance. I hate these people.

Classic insurance is cheap, but it seems most have an age limit on the driver and the car. car 10-20 years old or more, and driver has to be 20-30 years or more, all depending on the individual insurer. Got all the way through a phone call to one last night only to be told that I was too young. That was about 15 minutes after telling the guy my date of birth and going through all the other details.

Also seems the comparison sites are not consistent and show some insurers compulsary age related excess, but not others

I would advise checking the difference in price between 3rd party fire theft and fully comp-I've found in the past that fully comp can be cheaper!

better one than that...

daughter aged 23 with 1 year NCB 2ltr 480 changes the car for an identical spec 480 went to get insurance transfered to "new" car and gets refused because company no longer insure anyone with less than 2 years NCB ! but as they have only adopted the policy since Jan then they would continue her old policy on her old car ?

The world is being taken over by silver tongue muppets. :kill:

I hate insurance companies (and banks and bankers )

Richard,

For me in central London, direct line insurance has come in at over £115 cheaper than the competion (for two years in a row).

I'm beginning to find a few insurers which refuse to supply quotes to insure the car because if it's age (when I'm searching for cheaper quotes)- which I find really rather annoying (a law abiding citizen cannot get car insurance for a 100% legal car, parked in a secure area, from an insurance company certified by the FSA- how can that hapen? Hugely expensive quotes I could understand, but a blanket refusal seems just wrong. Rant over (apologies)).

Cheers,

Richard M Wade Esq.

Thanks!
There aren't many insurancers that offer affordable 3rd party insurance, if you know one let us know. What I have found were more expensive than fully comprehensive.

Any experience with Footman Jones and/ or Adrian Flux?

Insurance is a big rip off but you have to have it.
just a few pointers check that your car has an agreed value (in writing) not some book price your insurance company come's up which usually the scrap price a total written off 480 will probably get you a cheque for less than £400 from your insurance company which is nowhere near the price to replace one.
I had a similar situation many years ago with a mint condition BMW 525e they offered me £500 after a few weeks of wrestling with them I got £1500 (a bit of a difference) after I changed insurance companies!
I have been with the same company for 15 years they are a local office not some obscure call centre of jabbering asians, who dont know the difference between a bugatti and a rover (Top Gear reference)
this is not a racist comment just a fact.

Hi

I used to be with Adrian Flux, but this years renewal was too expensive so I have moved. It crazy, I used to pay about £360 fully comp in my first turbo, now, and because I came off the road a few years back in the ice and lost most of my no claims I was quoted just over £500  I have now moved to Sheila's Wheels....£364 (or there about) fully comp in my '95 Turbo....obviously no help at all to all you guys, but I did find it through Confused.com which was helpful. In all fairness Adrian Flux did try to compete with this quote, but they got to £426, still too much for me. I was sad to leave as they had been great for many years.
