Diagnosis on gearbox trouble

Hi guys,
Reverse and first gear are frequently hard to get in my 480 ES -89. It feels like the stick just hits something solid. The other gears work OK. Double-clutching doesn't help. I've had the bearings in the linkage replaced, but trouble reappeared/remained. The mechanic says that the sync rings are shot but my friends says that it's the linkage's fault. What can I do to find out what's really wrong ?

I had the same problem on my old 480 with reverse-gear, I spent an hour working on the problem and solved! Bought axle-studs and put both sides of the front axle on them. One of us was handling the gearstick inside the car while the other was lying underneath the car bending the linkage a little at a time. It runs perfect now!
Yours sincerely,

Daniël Wilten
<IMG SRC="http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/images/ ...

Did your cause trouble every time, or more randomly (like mine) ? In that case, how did you know when you had fixed it ?

Thanks,
David

Mine started with giving problems every now and then. Sometimes it seemed to give more problems when the engine was hot, but at other times it only gave problems with cold engine. So you couldn't make sense out of it. I know it has been fixed because it goes into reverse as smooth as silk <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">
Yours sincerely,

Daniël Wilten
<IMG SRC="http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/images/ ...
