Damn MoT people

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Damn MoT people

Post by mac star » Sat Nov 12, 2005 2:23 pm

Head lights to low - after it failed for headlights to high last time

1 back reg plate light out - (no joke he took the damn bulb out)

No exhaust mounting rubbers - 2 news ones on the passenger seat to go on

Windscreen cracked - nknew it would fail on that

Oh and wiat for this,

excesive play in the anti roll bars ball joints

grrrrrrrr that doesnt even count as a fail grrrrrrrrrrr

oh and a back fog light out

So what i need is someone with a 480 to park beside mine and let me set my lights to theres

most places i've been to for MOT will set lights while they check them for a fiver, i always make sure the adjusters are free though, otherwise they dont want to know.

I've had it done free at every one of the 6 mots i have had done.

- one time the bulb, he said, proably had a bent filament, because the aim was miles out.

He was right....totally bent?! Free retest.

What a crappy place in my opinion. A good / friendly garage would adjust the headlights for you (not too hard on 480), attach the exhaust mountings and replace the broken bulb. I have no idea about the play though, had it on my 1987 ES once, also failed APK (dutch MOT) and had to be replaced. What I don't understand: why have it tested if you know it will fail on the windscreen? Or did you want to know what else it would fail on too? Might have gotten a warning for some of the parts if the windscreen had been replaced? :dunno:

Know the feeling mate...one of mine just failed on headlamp too low too!! That and handbrake inefficient. If i don't get it back to them in 24hrs (too late now!) it is half price and if it's not back in 3 days...yip, full price. Give me a shout if you still need help with the headlamps and i'm sure we can find a wall nearby! :D

Place i took it to was a council depot, they don't actually do the repairs so have no need to dream up problems to make themselves cash! It seemed a good idea at the time but now...hmm...not so sure :?

The free retest is down to the disgretion of the mot station. This is due to the amount of time it takes to do a retest with the new computerised system. Where before they would just check to see that you have done the work which would take all of 5 minutes at the most now takes up to 30 mins with the new system.

You need to live near to the HOMD and get me to maintain your car then this wouldn't have been an issue.

Most garages will only charge a fiver to do the headlight adjustment.
