Newbie Questions!
Hello all,
I just bought a 91 ES yesterday, mechanically, things seem ok, but there are a few electrical problems.

1) The passenger window moves down automatically, but wont move up - is the mechanism knackered?

2) The info centre displays all sorts of messages - from 8PL, 7PL, the fuel guage is intermittent etc. Is it just a case of cleaning up all the contacts, replacing bulbs and resoldering the circuit? Or is it something worse? <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":\">

3) Theres a load of bulbs that need replacing - any ideas which wattage (?) are needed for
a) info centre
b) heater controls
c) clock
d) exterior lighting switch
e) elec window switches
Just so that I can buy these without having to dismantle the dash first?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Newbie questions
Congratulations on buying your 480 - welcome to the board!

I would guess that your passenger window mechanism is knackered. Your best removing the door trim, (which isn't as hard as it looks) and having a look to make sure. This is a common problem but not too difficult to fix. I had a garage do it for me when it happened to me (cost £50) but loads of people here have done it themselves. Try a search on previous discussions about this on the messageboard.

Not sure about the rest of your problems, but i dont think the window switches are meant to light up. Mine never have.

Re: Newbie questions
Welcome to the world of the 480.

The interior bulb are quite easy to sort. If you go down to your local Halfords they'll list all the replacement bulb for your pride and joy.
Whilst your there pick up a guide to the 480 by Haynes<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol"> Is only a guide though. This will tell how to change to the bulbs.

Good luck

dodgy motor?
I took the door trim off and sliced thru the membrane (oops!) and found that the glass in just sliding - albeit very stiffly - up & down on the runner. The cable end was also flapping about. Also, the motor never made any noise or movement when switched on. Can a motor from a 440 be used as a replacement?

Cheers

Re: Newbie Questions!
Regarding the window - it depends on what you mean exactly? Later models allow you to put the window all the way down (drivers side only) with one click of the switch, but there is no equivilant function to close the window again - did you mean this, or do you mean the window wont actually close at all?

1995 480 Turbo, Flame Red Metallic, Jacquard/Leather

Dodgy motor?
Hi
Yes I meant the passenger window wont close at all; it'll drop down easy enough using the switch, but wont budge upwards. Even using force - ie. grabbing the glass and yanking it up is very difficult (even with the switch pressed). It must be completely shot!

info centre
My info centre had similar problems, especially when driving over bumps. I found the solution to be to:
remove the instrument panel from the dash. Be careful you dont miss any screws, it will break easily.
Dismantle the instrument panel and remove the screen.
Clean all the contacts on the screen, and apply some di-electric grease. this was fairly tricky to get hold of, best bet is an electrical wholesler.
Since then the info centre has been fine. You will find the haynes guide to be usefull for seeing what will come apart, and it will also tell you all about the bulbs. The power window switches have no bulbs in them. The heated seat switches do, i didnt realise this till I took it apart. Good luck with your mis-information centre<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

Re: info centre
I would also have a close look at the PCB, you will probably find some dry joints which will give intermittent connections. If there are any, repair by reflowing the solder joint for a very brief time. Apply soldering iron (with fine tip) to the joint until solder melts then remove iron and allow joint to set again.

Right....
...I'll try those then!

Thanks all for the advice! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">
