Engine overhaul (revisie)

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Engine overhaul (revisie)

Post by svanhout » Sat Jan 18, 2003 1:41 pm

Hi there,

I have a question about engine overhaul. Has anyone replaced his engine with a new one? I'm considering to have this done but wonder how you think about it.

The usage of oil (1.ltr/1000km), bothers me the most and brings me the 'drive' to do it.

What experiences did this bring up, and last but not least was it worth the money?

Sander

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub32.ezboard.com/bvolvo480.show ... vanhout at: 1/18/03 1:51:34 pm

Depends on whether you intend to keep the car for a long time or not. When my first 480 1.7 inj model needed a new engine i enquired at the dealers and it was £1600 for the complete engine. Plus £400 to fit it. It seemed a lot to me at the time but as i intended to keep the car for life i thought it was a worthwhile investment.

I never did get to find out what happened as before the engine blew up on the car it was hit in the side by a people carrier and was subsequently written off. So i just kept quiet about the blown engine when it was valued and accepted the cheque from the other persons insurance company.

The other option is to do what i did when i aquired my second 480 which cost me nothing as the cambelt had snapped.
I rung round the specialist Volvo breakers for a secondhand lump, i found the exact same spec engine for mine that had come out of a mint 480 with 30,000 miles which had the paint vandalised and subsequently written off.

The engine cost me £200 delivered to my door and i spent another £250 ish on various bits like a new cambelt, clutch, head gasket and all other gaskets so the engine wouldnt leak anywhere and i wouldnt have to worry about any future repairs for a long time as essential to me it is now a new engine.

So my 480 was re engined for about £500. Note i did all the labour my self and it took me in total about 3 days work to do the job.

Garage labour rates would probably be about £250 ish just to swap engines but they could Charge another £250 ish to regasket the engine.

CHESH740R,
Who did you go to for your engine. I only ask because the current guys I use sent me a knackered camshaft and charged me £50 despite asking for a low in good nick.

The also charged me £150 for a head only, which although was a good low miler, they had damaged quite deeply in several places on the face, requiring a heavy skim to correct.

Cheers,
dan

dan

Cant find my reciept for the engine but my credit card statement says it was VOLVO SPARES UK LTD SOUTHAMPTON.

They did have a website when i bought the engine which was in May last year. Just tried to look them up on google and there is a link to www.volvospares.com but the site doesnt seem to be working.

I'm not wishing to recommend them to you just based on the engine i got i could have been lucky but from what i'll tell you below they seemed to be good guys.

As the cambelt had gone on my old lump i was going to get a head. They wanted i think about £125 for a head or £175 for complete engine. (it was an extra £25 delivery from southampton to bedford) They were extremely helpfull in making sure i got the exact same spec engine to what i was pulling out. I was a little sceptical about the low mileage they quoted but they were the best that i had found after ringing round and researching breakers so decided to go with it.

They told me they basically cut all hoses, cables wires to the engine. Undo the subframe and disconnet the top suspension mounts and lower the whole lot out. then they unbolt the engine and gearbox from the subframe and sent me the engine.

And to there credit i got exactly that, the engine had distributor cap , complete injection manifold, engine mounts all the sensors you name it. so i ended up with loads of spares which was excellent i thought compared to other 2nd hand engines i've bought for different makes as all you get from them is the block and head.

Still being skeptical myself on the 30,000 mile figure they quoted i thought i'd pull the sump and head off and have a look. It was indeed extremely clean and with (wear) i would expect for a 30,000 mile engine. (there was no evidence of wear at all really)

So give em a try and if you live nearby pop in and see before you pay to make extra sure.

Who have you used out of interest that have sold you sh*te heads???

UK volvospares of southampton!!
<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol">

It seems they don't like sending out engine parts as it leaves them with no use for the remains. Like l said the head was a good one, but damaged (after removal - should have asked for the whole engine) I doubt qualified mechanics are used to cut the pipework. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ferent.gif ALT=":|">

I got 4 half leather seats off them as well and they were good, although they needed a bit of a scrub up.

The camshaft was not only a waste of money but a waste of my time and the time of the guy building my head. Does anyone have any other UK scrapyard suggestions?
