Car Gender Issues
What gender are our cars???
We love our 480s; they have personality and it seems impossible simply to call them "it", but is it a he or a she?
I reckon it's normal - for blokes at least - to refer to cars, like ships, as female. But most women I know think ther cars are male. Now, I can see there may be plenty of scope for subverted sexual fantasy and outrageous gender-stereotyping here (he's stubborn / I never know what she'll do next etc etc) - and far be it from me to discourage such meaty discourse...
But apart from that, is your 480 a bloke or a lass? a fellow or a Lady? a geezer or a chavette? a girl or a boy?
Or is it some other genderless species that is too evil to name???
To start us off: Sheba, my Paris ES is/was definitely a lady. A somewhat faded old lady with a twinkle in her eye and a taste for leather.
Tonee I assumed was also a girl but I am beginning to think s/he may be a bit of a tomboy. Nothing wrong with that but it came as somehting of a surprise, that's all. And I now I have to change the spelling from Toni (too girly) to Tonee to match. Wierd, huh?
Maybe I just have too much time on my hands.

Tonee: '93 Two Tone. High mileage but nice 'n' tidy.
Sheba: '91 ES Paris Special. Love that leather, baby. Scrapped and used as a spares car.

It's funny, I'd always considered the whole "Males giving female names" to be true, but my Clio was male (Though I never gave him a name)
I bought the car off a woman, who told me the car was male. I decided "Hmm... maybe it'll be female for me" - took it for a drive and "Woah, it really is male... :/"
Plus, "Wedgie" isn't a very feminine name

the volvo symbol refers to the male species so they should really all be males...but hey, each to their own.

Blimey you could almost be describing me

A car has to be Female, any machine is female. Am I the only one who pat's his car on the bonnet and thanks her at the end of a long trip? I may regret saying that later!
Every car I've owned has in some way taken a place in my memory that is happy. My Bravo was rubbish and just always broke down, but it made me get my licence and gave me Freedom. Then a Volvo 440 1.8, much nicer car, I really hated having to scrap her. The only car I hated so much I didn't refer to as anything, however I did kick it a lot in anger, was a Ford Granada Scorpio. I would feel odd having a bond like I do with cars, such as the 480, if I refered to it as male.

Don't be daft, everyone knows that the volvo symbol doesn't mean anything manlike !Joolz wrote:the volvo symbol refers to the male species so they should really all be males...but hey, each to their own.

Océane is a girl, she's the love of my life, and I guess all the car's I've had were girls too, except the 205GTi and the 460...for some reason, they didn't feel girly

Female. Definately.
After all, she's very attractive and perfectly sized (although less knowledgable males would disagree without even getting to know her), she's the perfect balance between comfort and sportiness and she's massive amounts of fun to ride in but you're still happy to take her to meet your parents. She also has a great personality and a sense of humour (oh how we laugh when she fixes an electrical problem herself after weeks of head-scratching and frustration)...
On the flip side, she can stubbornly refuse to do what you ask of her occacionally (and for no apparant reason, too) and, of course, she can be ruinously expensive to maintain...

Hmmm...
"The Baroness" way definately a female...
The Fierce One was originally my Dad's nickname for my Nan (kinda ironic when she was 90 god bless her!) so although the car is named in rememberance of her, it's far too violent and unreliable to be anything other than male!

I'd say 480's are male!
A woman wouldn't be seen dead in a two tone dress!! plus ... the 480 has 'pop-ups' to use at night time!
nah ... just the shape makes me think the 480 is male ... not a curve in sight!

Well mine is female. My other cars, the beetle and camper were both male, after being let down by men more than my motors ever let me down, I decided that I was going to have female cars from now on!

My first 480, a Lavender '90 ES, was refined, comfortable, no drinker, but very eh... independant ... definitely a she. My second 480, a black '89 Turbo, was too fast for its own good, a bit harsh now and then, perfectly happy with a couple of pints more and as accountable as you could wish for... a he it is, beyond reasonal doubt!

Mine's deffo a female. White being a girly colour anyway, but i just feel the car is very graceful, elegant and tastefully designed...just like the right woman. All my car's have been female. I suppose it's the closest i'll get to being inside one (that was a trifle ott, i know )
I think the high maintanence and stroppy moods co-incide quite well too...
