Opening Bonnet...

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Opening Bonnet...

Post by random_monkey » Thu May 04, 2006 10:53 am

OK, Really REALLY stupid question, but I'm just baffled

This is one of those things that the Haynes book takes for granted (that we're not completely inept), so I shall ask here.

How in the hell do I open the bonnet?
I must have pulled every goddamn lever in the car, and it still won't open :/

Cheers.

The bonnet release on a UK car is in the passenger side footwell. Pull that to release the bonnet. Feel under the bonnet in the middle of the width and locate the secondary release mechanism (does this bit have a proper name?), push it and lift the bonnet up until the strut (on the right-hand side of the bonnet) locks into position.

As your car is an 89 model there is a good chance you wont have the self locking bonnet stay. Follow Drazyls advice to the tee but when lifting the bonnet you may have to lift the bonnet stay on the right to hold the bonnet up.

Didnt want you thinking it would hold it self and getting a a sore head because of it! 88/89 was the swap year to the self locking arm thingy from a normal stay but I have had 3 89 cars and 2 have had teh normal type stay!

One thing to be wary of is that the bonnett release cable can stretch a bit so you may have to give a an extra hard tug back (my ES has this problem!)

Sometimes the plastic handle drops off and just leaves the steel bit prodruding (I found a scrapped 440 and pinched the plastic handle from that to replace my missing one).

Also on the bonnet itself - you can open it 3/4 as normal on the 1st click of the stay, or VBB showed me you can click the bonnet stay back again and it opens 90degrees vertical for better access.

What's so funny about that? How else can you grease your nipples unless in the service position? :dunno:

Less likely to bang your head when sticking your dipstick back down the chute.

Cheers guys, worked :D

And it's not the bonnet strut that's broke, it's the boot one :D
Fortunately, it sloooowly came down so I didn't receive a concussion, just a mild "wtf?!"
