Front speaker grills complete... (56k Users beware)

Due to the fact my door speakers have centre mounted protruding tweeters, it was a bit of a bugger getting the old grills to go back on. I didn't want to leave them off, so i set about a little DIY modification.

I got two passenger and two driver speaker covers. I removed the grill from one and (industrial) glued the complete one on to the top.

I then 'caked' the joins round the edge in good old filler...

Then, once dried i spent about 500 hours sanding it down (i did put a little too much on!).

Once sanded, i put them on and made sure they fit. Perfect!

Then they were primed-i decided that as the original grills were chipped anyway, i'd re-spray the grill to make it look nice again too...

Then once dried i sprayed them. I wasn't sure what colour to do them. I was going to do them the same colour as my bodywork, but thought that would look a bit poo, so to continue the black theme inside the car, i done them gloss black. I think they look pretty good, and being deeper they actually clear the speakers but still give it the factory look (apart from the colour of course!)

I'm happy anyway! :D

Nice job Dan - they look great! :-D

Maybe matt black would have looked even more 'factory' but looks like you've got a good finish on them.

Definitely worth having grilles on as they're just where you're likely to stick a foot through the cones otherwise.

Yeah, i was just thinking that...doesn't actually look factory at all does it! I was actually thinking matt black, but i know matt surfaces have a tendancy to get scuffed or mark easily, so i thought glossy... I'm thinking a quick rub down and some matt paint might be a good idea...hmm :?

They look great glossy!

It's true they don't look 'factory' ... but when you put that much effort in to it ... you kinda want it to look a little special ... don't you? ;)
