I cant find the source of the fuel smell that appears after filling the gas tank to full. Can't find any drip leaks, but the car smells heavily of gas. I have traced it to the rear right side of the car.
The smell doesn't come fom the filler cap, more likely from the rear wheel-well / inner arch, or from underneath it..
There is no smell inside the car.
Can anyone please help?

Re: Fuel Smell
Have you checked the cover cap is correctly seated over the fuel pump carrier between the rear seats?

Re: Fuel Smell
Thanks for helping me out James.
The whole thing was tilting so the ring didn't seal Jack shit! There is also a crack on it where the vertical fuel line comes out/in on the top.

Re: Fuel Smell
I had the same and ended up having to get a new fuel pump carrier as I wouldn't have thought it is fixable when cracked. Damaged by some idiot garage then covered up!
Mine overfowed when the tank was full.
Good luck.. I'd be interested to hear how you get on fixing it.
Also, be very careful when you remove the fuel pump carrier from the tank (if you do) as it's quite easy to damage the arm for the level sensor or knock the strainer off on the bottom of the pump

Re: Fuel Smell
No need to remove the fuel pump unless the black rubber seal ring is out of location. There is a right way to put these in and a wrong way.
Rightway lift the fuel assembly upwards then push the black rubber ring into the top of the tank opening then push the fuel assembly into it . It will then seal properly.
DO NOT
seat the black ring on the fuel assembly and push into the fuel tank opening as it is unlikely to seal properly.

Re: Fuel Smell
True, true.
However, I think he has a cracked union on the top. They are set into plastic and have obviously been attacked before if they've cracked.
This fault had me without a 480 for nearly two months earlier this year. Bloody 80's plastic!

Re: Fuel Smell
Fixed it today. Changed the pump fitting due to the crack. It actually went pretty smooth when following your advices. Quick fix - many thanks!
