No, bearings are something like £15 for the fronts, and more for the back.

Hubs on the other hand, are £60ish for the front IIRC, and, more for the back.

The bearings are bugger-all - what they'll make you pay out the nose for is the labour required for fitting them - Most garages claim it's a 3 hour job - easily £120 of labour even at a cheap place - I wouldnt like to ask Volvo!

£119 was just for the part...
I think the bloke was a bit embarrassed when I burst out laughing. :dunno:
So, does anyone else make the hubs cheaper?
Don't fancy the sound of tackling the individual bearings to be honest Chris, but if it saves me £100 I'll do it.

Are you not meant to change anything to do with the brakes in pairs to even wear and so you dont get sideways braking(my renault 5 with a seized caliper  great way to scare your G/F...)? just what I thought but then I could be wrong lol.

Yes rob, but this is nothing to do with the brakes...you don't replace bearings in pairs, or at least don't have to!

Sorry - I was having a blonde moment. Had just been looking on GSF at disc brakes and was reading about with/without hub discs and when hubs were mentioned I just said about brakes lol  I blame it on little sleep, an annoying drive through weston super mare and other things on my mind...

How do you know when the bearings need replaced? :?

i ask because just last night as i was rolling upto traffic lights there was a knocking sound coming from the front drivers side. As i slowed down, the gap between the knocking increased?! however, the noise seemed to stops when i used the brakes?

This has happened ever since ... Could this be a bearing? HELP!!!

yes that can be bearings
when you brake the movement of the bearings is pushed back to a minimum so the knocking stops

Sounds like the CV joint if the wheel bering is ok.

Try turning the steering to full lock and then turning the wheel. If the noise id worse then it is the outer CV joint.

Also check the tyre for lumps or damage, as that will sometimes make the suspension creak.

You can try moving the driveshaft up and down, any play means something is worn out. Find out where the movement is, and try replacing that part.

Probably CV joints its a knocking noise - check the rubber boots for damage and leaked grease - otherwise "new" driveshafts off your friendly scrappy will set you back around 15 notes and aren't the worst job in the world to change out - a garage will crucify you though. You'll need a breaker bar or some scaffolding to get the drive-shaft nut off <<and a torque wrench if you're going to be accurate when you put it back on>> - and a ball-joint seperator <<a large fork thing you hit with a hammer to get the steering arm off the hub>> and pre-skinned knuckles to stop you skinning them on the car.

Wheel bearings on the way out will whine through the Castrati scale as wheel speed increases - will get louder on corners as weight is shifted to the bad bearing.
