What wheels fit

Post by Derek » Tue Mar 04, 2008 7:58 pm

When i got my 480 it had BK racing wheels (model BK106) with 195/50/15R tyres and there was'nt any problems with rubbing at all but when i fitted taurs alloys 195/55/15R tyres the outside sidewall of the rear passengers tyre is being shredded to bits on the lip of the rear arch. why is this only happening on the one side and i found out that the 3 spoke alloys that were on the car were only meant for a bmw.
and my car has'nt been lowered.

Hmmm, thats odd, cos the standard rims on a GT are 195/55/15's...

One side only....check to see if the panhard rod is bent or something. IT shouldn't rub. I've had 205/45-r17s on there and lowered 40mm, and barely rubbed at all.

94 Turbo - Black (Converted from NA 2.0)

205/40/17 rub a little bit on the backs however no 185 or 195 should rub! So you been driving it while it's rubbing a lot and it's blown the tyre???

Got a picture??

It does'nt rub all the time only when you go over uneven roads or when there's weight in the back. i don't have any pictures of the tyre it was a while ago but when it blew i was comming back from glasgow airport after picking up mum and dad and you know the way motorways have like dips in them after it rubbed two/ three times bang! car went all over the palce. The lettering on the new tyre has started to wear away and has a few deep slash marks in it.
Untill i get this fixed iv had to put these stupid 3 spoke wheels back on.

Does anyone have the measurments for the different panhard rods. the only thing i can think of is the one on the car is too long and is pushing the axel too far to the left

Is your ride height OK?
Measure the distance between centre wheel to wheel arch and compare.

The ride height is the same on both sides but when i measured between the wheel rim and the arch the whole axel is nearly 1cm to the left. so i think either its the wrong panhard rod or i think the arches have been replaced before and who ever did it made a mess of it

derek do you realise that the most coommon worn out item on a 480 of your age is rear shocks £45 a pair for bilstiens from euro parts.

your symptoms point at this problem , fit them and go 10 mph faster round corners with no rubbing.

quite easy job too!! like 2 out 10 easy.

15mm socket and 2 15mm spanners or 17mm i cant remember which size,
happy cornering cheers felyx
140mph for £175 just test the brakes
