They were "sort of" designed to do it, but if the effect is way more pronounced than it should be, it could be that you've over compensated the rear;
So.... Look to the front. Shocks? Anti-roll bar drop links/bushes? Wishbones? All in good condition?
Tyre pressures all correct (not over inflated at the rear?)

Potent car for a new driver - funnily enough the 440 turbo came up very favourably and fondly remembered in a conversation I was having with two "older" Volvo master technicians at my local dealer just last week. I'd say your daughter is very lucky!
Can't add anything to what's been said here really; in many ways you are fighting against what the car was designed to do. Tyre pressures is definitely a good point though; it can make quite a difference on a 480 (I always run 32 front and 30 back, which is slightly up on stated figures but I find makes for the best handling - less feels a touch sluggish, more gets a touch hairy!).
I think your last post is spot on - don't try and change the car, teach your daughter how to be capable of safely getting out of it what it can surely offer.
Good luck!
David

Re: lift off oversteer
Something often overlooked is the age or indeed brand/ model of tyre - make sure they're not ancient and make sure its half decent quality matching rubber!
