I hear you knocking (from rear offside)

Hi,

I'm new to the forum, and the 480 - I've just picked up a 92 480s, and I love it, but it's pretty noisy at the back (driver's side). It's a knock that has no rhythm, and is especially loud when travelling at low speed and over bumpy terrain.
I think it's the anti-roll bar bush has gone (I had that happen on a 98 Hyundai coupe), but I have NO mechanical expertise whatsoever to put it right, if that's what it even is. Am I best off getting a complete anti-roll replacement (is that possible), or what? I bought the car purely because of the way it looks and drives - I just hope it won't cost the earth to maintain if I'm not a mechanical whiz.

Cheers,

Nick

buy some new rear shocks , you'll probally be able put your around the top covers of the shocks and have them crumble off in junks of rust etc.
they are about £40 to £50 from GSF CARPARTS online or instore AND bilstien shocks from EUROCARPARTS online or instore .

if your feeling brave jack the car up take the wheel off and just 1 nut and bolt at the bottom and 1 bolt at the top hold each one on. pretty easy really mate .

easy to test the shocks just stand on the back bumper and jump off it and if it flops a little up and down more than once then the shocks are shagged.

i have had 8 480's and changed the shocks on every one of them.

cheers felyx

it won't be your anti roll bar nor would you need to buy a new one. It will be one of 2 thigs.

The rear shocks Approx £40

Anti roll bar drop links £10 each best done in pairs and thats from me but also available from other places

Could also be the exhaust that is touching your rear axle !!!!

Make sure the exhaust is correctly mounted and make sure it is hanging on all bushes (or how do you call those rubber thingies ???)

i have the same problem whit my car
the shocks are already changed a year ago, so that can't be it
the exhaust can't be also because lost time i have rewelded the exhaust (whas rusted).

i have never had a antiroll strut that makes this kind of noise
but the rubbers of the suspension arms and the extra arm that goes to the back of the car can't give this. and how about the rubbers from the bar on the axle itself that is placed against de carrosserie.

ps every rubber is sprayed whit tefon kind of spray. the only rubber i don't have done is indeed the antiroll struts.

If you fit bilsteins on the back they dont quite fit snugly and the ofr rattles dementedly. Easy way to find out
loosen rear wheel
jack car up stick axle stand under car
remove wheels and loosen the bottom bolt and see if you can jam a washer /spacer in between the srut and the bottom of shock tighten up refit whell go for drive and the noise should be a hell of a lot less or not at all.
