rear brake caliper rebuild
Ordered 2 rebuilding set's at Volvo.
But how do i rebuild the rear brake calippers ??
First get them out, oke can do that, know about the screw.
But then :::
Can I pull the piston out, clean everything, new seals in it and close it ??
Is it this simple or should I do something else ??
Info is appreciated for MOT.........

Did you rebuild your brake calipers with the rebuild kit ?
I'm looking forward to do the same on mines. Also, where did you get the rebuild kit ? If you got it from Holland, let me know, I live at 25 km from the dutch border.
If you could post some explanations and pictures of the differents steps taken to rebuild the brake calipers, this would be greatly appreciated.

rebuild kit
No, I didn't rebuild them.
I thought it was wiser to order new ones instead of trying to rebuild them with no knoledge of how to do it properly.
After all, a car is as fast as it's brakes.
But Lantin, I have new seals for the rear calippers that cost me something like 70 Euro's.
Pm me if you want them for a nice price, after all, I do not need them anymore.

rebuil kit
Martinholmes, just wondering :: what parts were included in that rebuild kit ???
I only got the 2 rubber seals around the piston.
I think there's more needed to rebuild the rear calippers, right ??

Havn't been able to find a topic detailing the rebuild of a rear caliper ... sorry.
I paid a visit to a french forum member and he gave me some good tips.
The pad adjustment was stucked on one caliper, causing me to have no handbrake but I managed to release it with some WD40. (getting the first screw off was the most difficult).
Something weird : in Belgium you cannot buy brake caliper rebuild kits anymore unless you are a registered profesionnal ! They claim the brake caliper is a safety item on the car ( much like an airbag or a seatbelt ) and thus, you cannot perform DIY maintenance tasks on theses components.
I found a brake rebuild service for around 50€ per caliper, you hand them the old ones, you get them back 48h later. As new ones are around 150€ in Belgium ... I'd consider rebuilding the old ones before changing them.

Rebuilding brake calipers is pretty simple, just remove the pistons. Sometimes you have to use compressed air to get them out if they are really stuck. Use a thick piece of wood and a piece of cloth to catch the piston, otherwise they can get airborne! If that is the case it's probably better to get a complete rebuilt caliper. If they are stuck the pistons and/or caliper surface are pitted and not useable anymore. Replace the old seals with the new ones, grease the pistons and seals with special brakegrease. Inspect the inside surface of the brakecaliper. (if pitted forget it you will have to replace the caliper.) If you have the pistons out flush the innards of the caliper with methanol (spiritus in dutch do not use oil based liquids like white spirit!) and let them dry. Put them back together and bleed the system with fresh DOT4. That's all.
