clutch control issues

Post by billy5000 » Wed Jan 25, 2006 2:07 am

Hi all

When im out and about in my 480 i hate sitting on the top of the hill at traffic lights.

i prefer clutch control when at the lights and find the car idle buggers about while sitting still(especialy on hills)and pulling away during this is bad to the point of stalling and to revive i have to give it some welly(overev is inbarrasing).

any ideas out there or does it sound like my idle valve needs a once over as my revs at idle are ok at 900-1000rpm its just response from pedal-gas-move :D

im glad ive got a radio as i would have killed that dash squeek 2day arghhhhh,i hope the fiddle 2night has helped(it better)

cheers

I would give the Idle Valve a clean out to start with and see how it goes, Mine has only just started to idle at 1100 - 1200 yesterday unless you hook your foot under the accelerator and lift it up.... I had exactly the same problem on an old 440 years ago but didnt know about things like idle valves etc back then.... in fact, in them days it was lucky I knew which end to put petrol in!!! :D

or if you're lazy like I am try redex in the petrol a few times, I know it seems too good to be true but it always works for me :D

Are you sure it's not clutch judder though. (it happens when your clutch is just starting to wear, slipping is the next stage but is often a long way off so don't panic if it is. Sorry to be a doom merchant....just a thought  I think you can adjust the clutch plates in this situation but i don't know enough about that sort of stuff.......hopefully someone will tell me i'm talking crap

Handbrakes are quite useful in my experience! Balancing the clutch for more than a few seconds is the quickest way to wear it out. ((if you balance it for long enough you can make your car smell of rotten eggs, which is VERY amusing  )(mentally adopt a sarcastic tone whilst reading that last sentence))

Steve!

You might want to try this too.

Adjusting your throttle cable.

There may be some slack in it.Turn the black quadrant it wraps around very carefully whilst looking to see if there is any slack in the cable being taken up by you doing this. Also prod the cable with a finger (ooer!) as you'll feel how much slack is in it then.

To set it right, take the clip off the black grooved rubber part of the cable which passes through the bracket. Then just pull the cable through until when you move that black quadrant it tightens the cable but not so that its beginning to turn.Hope that makes sense! Then replace your clip on the relevant new groove on the rubber sleeve cover thingy!

The good thing about this is your car's throttle will be opening properly and you get better use of the throttle, which is nice! :D

Alas, you are brning th linings of your clutch away faaaaar quicker by not just using the handbrake matey, sorry!
