Clutch kits- what fits?

Both manual and automatic transmission are discussed here, including the clutch!

Clutch kits- what fits?

Post by VanDerGraaf » Thu Aug 25, 2005 8:24 am

Simple question really- does anyone know if any clutch kits for other cars fit the 480 Turbo (somehow Renault springs to mind).

Would make sense, wouldn't it... It is a Volvo gearbox though, and in their infinite wisdom they probably made the spline on the input shaft different so you have to buy a specific clutch.

Would be interesting to know though...

Turbos got two clutch sizes 200mm and 215mm. There are alternatives from Renaults.

The Renault 5 Turbo for instance is 200mm, but the Volvo one is actually stronger. Then again you can get a lot more options for clutchs on Renault 5s, paddle, organic, sintered etc.

Renault Clio 2.0 16v and Williams came with 200mm or 215mm depending on the year or as I think they call it, 'phase'. Again, quite a few options.

Look for clutchs with 26 splines and 22mm, some prety hefty clutchs here

Yeah Rocket, this is along the lines of what i was thinking....hmm, options!

Perhaps unwise for a non-techy like me to consider but obviously someone else'd be doing the fitting... ;)

Hmm, paddle clutchs don't seem to last too long.... :(

Ok chaps this what i'm up to right now... Richard's ordered me a kit for the later larger clutch set up. The strongest combination consists of the volvo cover/press plate and a renault williams clio friction disc. Anything else will not cope with large power hikes... ;) hope that clears things up, Edd

Been looking into this, all williams clutches are 200mm. The 'uprated one' from sachs is more likely a 1.8 16v laguna / clio 172 clutch...but god knows.

I don't know for sure yet, but I will find out soon.

I think it may well be a Laguna plate, but as I say I'll find out soon.

Clio Williams clutch is 200mm, taking 175NM standard

New Clio 172 and 182 are 215mm, taking 200NM standard

Standard B18FT is 175NM

So really you could fit a Clio 172/182 clutch and it would be strong enough to take modded tourque then?

if you have your old clutch plate you can get them resurfaced in a tougher compand and i did my last 1 at 1.5mm thicker than standard , this cost me £25 cash and they could of reconned the pressure plate and made it 35% stiffer and stronger than standard for £45 this work is done by "FRICTION SERVICES" in warmley bristol, but just look up brake /clutch re lining in your local yellow pages and if your first number can't help they will know somebody who can, and on a huge plus side the company i use is a 24 hour turnaround on clutch plates and 72 hours on strentging the pressure plates.

cheers felyx
140mph for £175 just test the brakes
