Turbo Auto to Manual Conversion-Will some of you help me?

Post by catgroom » Fri Sep 17, 2004 12:44 pm

Hi Everybody!

Matbat has just suggested doing a manual box conversion from Auto to my Turbo.I know roughly what it entails.Would any of you guys be willing to help me with said conversion?

I reckon we could do it in 2 days max.I think all I need is the box, clutch assy, gear lever and selector rod mechanism, shorter (?) n/s driveshaft and Im sure theres something else I've missed.Maybe a different ECU?Naaaah, not sure though!

Im going to attach a poll to this as if some of you are up for it and have the workshop/garage or just plain space,I could do this easily by Xmas!

Cheers Guys!

Steve. :hopping:

I'm sure its do-able. Norfolk is a little far for me though.... You will also need to remove the startblocking feature (so it would only start in P or N) else it won't start.
The clutch cable....if you have a 'box with a long release arm, you must have the pedal to match. they are different!!

I'll be pleased to offer any remote advice...

Mad....

but do-able

You need to change the flywheel, and yes you need the ECU to match. Best to fit the later type flywheel and a blue ECU, as the clutch is much stronger than the early type.

As I was asking a Volvo-mechanic if an AT - MT conversion was possible (having some AT troubles with my car), he said it was quite a lot of work and that there is also some difference in the suspension of the transmission box. It would be wise too have a scrapcar at hand, he said.

Good luck with the job!

Hmmm, yeah, I think the subframe is different. That is probably what the mechanic meant. As in gearbox mounts. I think it's a nice idea but a lot more work than just switching the boxes over. Probably easier to sell the manual and buy a manual complete car.

Oh, yeah, the subframe is different! it bends down to accomodate the larger auto box.

If you are having it all out anyway, its only another 4 bolts. Just dont drop it on your little finger....
