Making pea soup !

Post by Bramdeman » Wed Jun 09, 2004 10:04 am

Its official, i'm cooking pea soup in my transmission :( It was getting harder to shift and a slight whining sound in some gears, also it was getting stuck in third and fifth gear. Let some of the oil out and it was grey with chunks and all.

I'm told that the m51, m53 and m59 boxes all fit (i have an 89 turbo) and that the later versions are stronger, does it make a big difference? m59 boxes are hard to find and cost a lot more. Is it worth the search/money? Or should i just chuck in the first one i find and hope for the best ?

cheapest way ?

drain oil, flush with diesel, pour in new oil, and meantime keep eyes open, and visit every dumpyard around. look also at the other 400's.

I personally (iam dutch too) had a big fiasco mounting the same box again from scap. it broke whithin 2 months.

(i am dutch too, look in "de gouden gids" for a "carrec" gearbox recondition firm...)
They told me (donno if true, but it still lasts) they rebuild a special gearbox for me (480 turbo-chipped...) the price was about the same as i paid for the dumpyard box earlier.
luck,
JPF

That makes sence but i just found a m59 for 250 euro's, so thats not bad at all i think. Im not sure wich type i have now, there doens't seem to be a label on it, but i think its an m50 if it's the original one. So i'm just looking at it as an upgrade  Maybe chiptune it later :D

The diesel trick sounds good but it's to late, was glad to make it home last night. Its gone from bad to impossible to drive. I can borrow a complete mechanic's workshop to put the new transmission in but it's gonna be in 3 weeks

Looks like i'll be using my sisters ES automatic for a while, thats the slowest 480 ever made! :( <--while typing that i just realised how spoiled I really am

Try and go for the M59 gearbox as this is the latest gearbox which is stronger.

If you put a gearbox on from an ES this will increase your acceleration but decrease your top end. Also the life of the gearbox would be shorter than a gearbox from a turbo.

Regular gearbox oil changes also help to prolong the life of the gearbox.

Its a little late for that Lee!

Only kidding! ;) I know and i did...

I'm gonna go for the m59 i really like the gears on the turbo, doing 170km/h and still having a gear left :D .....nothing like it. And its hard to drive in the rain as it is

it's hard to start moving for me with m59! still haven't used to it, sometimes it dies on me... shame, shame, shame... it's like starting in second gearshift on 'regular' car..

That sounds more like a clutch problem bbf, the gears on the m59 are the same as in all the other turbo transmissions.

its just the type of car. all gti's and gsi's of that time have to be driven away gently with the clutch..
luck,

it's just i haven't got used to it, i've driven an automatic for 5 years and latter on citroen bx who had more torque at lover rpm, so no problem with that. clutch is ok, i have a smooth transition from none to full engage, not a 'digital' type.. i just loose rpm and the car stops. like a newbe driving :) or is it the car itself who makes me feel like driving the first time and being inthusiastic and stuff..
