Both manual and automatic transmission are discussed here, including the clutch!

new 480 fan, clutch nearly gone, help!

Post by milos480turby » Mon Nov 05, 2007 7:06 pm

heya, ive recently become a fan of the 480s, my cousin used to have one, and his mate did too, eventually i came round to gettin one as i wanted a new car, and this one i got was near immaculate with no rust, 55k miles and only £550!

anyways, my clutch slips quite badly when accelerating now, and i know its nearly dead... ive searched the forum about what clutch to get. my 480 is a 1990 G reg 1.7 turbo, and i heard that there was a changeover from crappy clutches to the better more reliable ones that year. i believe i had the crappier one as its gone after only 55k miles...

not knowing much about clutches, or 480s, i couldnt figure out all the technical talk about them, howeve this was the best i could find on this forum:
ht tp://w ww.partsforvolvosonline.c om/product_info. php?products_id=3305
{delete the spaces, as it wouldnt allow me to post the link in full just yet}

is this the correct one to get? bearing in mind, id also like to eventually get a rich mod of which ive heard sooo much about ;) (thats if he still does them)

also, id like to lower it by about 40mm, i know this is the wrong section but as im here... ive heard theres some brand make of springs that cost roughly £100 and are THE ones to get for 480s, anyone able to enlighten me?

many thanks,

sam

hey dude....

eurocarparts and GSF are good places for pretty much as much kit as you'll need for the 480.....clutch wise....the volvo one aint that bad tbh....with the standard richmod a new volvo clutch will be ok.....but again....its one of those 'piece of string' things....some people say theyre good, others have found them shit....greenstuff do a decent friction plate kit....i think rich himself went for a paddle clutch type thing(?) but hes got a whole herd of horses, so it would figure......

You have two types of turbo cluches pending on what year you turbo is. You can get them supplied and fitted for around £160. Please bear in mind that the cluch normally takes a full day to do. As yours is on a 89 G I would fit the older style clutch but you need to make sure that it has a double spring instead of the cheaper single spring set up.

As for lowering 40mm the choose is yours. Just get the springs you want. I have PI which are good. But again its all down to how much money you want to throw at it. The best way is coilover but this cost you nearly a grand. The next best thing is koni shocks and pi spring with new bushes cost about £5-600. Cheapest way which will alter the looks and a slight performace upgrade is to do just the spring which should cost no more than £100

Most garages will charge you around about £100 to do a spring swap and up to £150 for spring and shocks.

There are people and places that will do it for less.

My advice is drive carefully so not to completely knacker the clutch get all the suspension bits and clutch then get it all done at once. This is easily acheivable in a weekend with a good result.

lowering by 40 mm will make the car handle soo differenrtly in a really good way however speed bumps become mountains and scraping exhausts is not uncommon in a lowered car , the rich mod is wirth waiting for as well does make a lot of difference.

Hello mate,

I'm in the process of replacing the clutch and suspension myself at the mo. As I'm sure you'll understand by now its not a good idea to lower the car unless you're going to replace at least the bushes at the same time.

www.partsforvolvosonline.com for bushes and torque struts

01822 613200 these guys will sort you out with Lesjofors springs and Bilstein shocks

$88.90 4x30mm lowering springs
$74 x2 Bilstein black rear shocks

Don't forget to replace nuts and bolts at the same time!
Prices are sterling by the way, my mac doesn't like pound signs # see!!

regards Ian
