Welding

Can someone explain the risks in using an electric welder on the car? Is it O.K. if you disconnect the battery, or is it O.K. if you earth the welder close to the welding point? I don't want to fry any electronics.

I'd disconnect the battery for sure. I'd also put the welding earth as
near the point of weld as possible, and if you can, shield any nearby cables as best you can (tin foil?) - even remove them if possible. Obviously welding the car will degrade the rustproofing around the area, so you may need to address that. I assume this is an arc welder then? I have some sparklers left over from bonfite night - I bet they go really well in the arc welder grips

Hi Chris
The official volvo guideline is discoonect aal electrnic modules
this means at least to disconnect
- the CEM
- the Renix module
- the battery

I agree with Gerr. Also have heard of some people that welded with all these things except battery connected, but you're f*cked (sorry
) if it does go wrong...

Thanks all. I think I'll try to find someone with a gas welder. It's to weld back the broken door stop plate in the door.

disconnect the alternator too, in addition to what gerrsvolvo says.

If teh welding needed os only on the door.
Why not simply remove the whole door.
It will probably also make the welding easier.
