Post by graham dobbs » Tue Sep 28, 2004 12:45 pm

last night just about to go to work :badmood: turned lights on only the right one lifted fully , the left struggled and stopped about a third of way up in my hurry i got out and assisted the light by pulling it up ( yes i know this is proberly wrong but i was in a hurry ) and id sort it in morning . its been playing up for a while lifting very slowly so i tried the usual lubed the linkage checked the gas strut etc seemed ok and it was great for a while then gradually getting worse .....
i went to local breakers yard and got a replacement motor fitted it and its great now :hopping:
ive read various posts about pop ups and hope this helps someone .

Hmm... Ive had a similar problem. It seems like the motor turns something but weither slips on it or doesn't get enough purchase as they get older. If someone could confirm this it would be great before i rip the thing apart.

Cheers

Hi Johnd

sometimes the nut that holds the leverarm to the motor gets a little loose
and is than showing the effect of not properly opening en closing teh popup headlichts.
A 10 mm or was it 11 mm spanner and all is okidpki.

You can get to this nut after you have removed the cornerlights (dayrunninglights with the directionidicator).
There is not much space but it is possible.

ood luck

Cheers for the tip. I tried getting at it with only the headlight surround off but was a bit tricky.

Ill give it a try later as it seemed a bit loose.

often the ball joint has play in it making it look like the splined shaft is slipping. it has a 10mm nut holding the lever arm on to the splined shaft.
i had to replace one of mine last week, got it down to an hour between starting and finishing!!
sometimes its easier just to replace the motor. if its the passenger side you need ive got a spare.

Hi Guys,

Well it seems like it is the ball joint or something as the nut seems tight. It just seems to get stuck about a 1cm and with a quick tap closes. Opens without a problem though. The lever assembly is really wobbly making me think it's the joint though.

Things always get a bit wobbly with a dodgy joint though

Murf, it would be the chuffin drivers side otherwise I would have had it off you.

Cheers

ive still got the linkage if you want it, its got a bit of play in it but if its any use its yours!!

otherwise it could be the microswitch inside the motor or something internal jamming.
certainly, all my problems were solved by replacing the whole thing. i did re-use the original lever arm though as it had less play in it than the one i got from the scrappy!
alternatively, leave them popped up and pull the fuse. i hate that though cos everyone sees them up during the day and knows they are faulty!

Aaargh so many things to check.
Well l have a spare relay and 2 gas shocks spare now if anyone can use them.
:badmood:

This thread is getting like saturday swap shop. So l can ALSO check the nut inside the corner light and then the lever arm, althought the fact it refuses to open at all now would indicate not play but nut failure (what the hell am l saying lol)

Mines driver's side too, so l'll get to the back of the queue if anyone has a spare. Johnd, l'm off to a Norfolk scrapyard tomorrow. If l find it hasn't been pillaged already l'll try and get you one too :).
