Info Centre Preference

Post by Ernie » Fri Sep 24, 2004 12:39 pm

Most of the time my info centre is in the "Oil" position, the other info is hardly needed. Or I must be running out of petrol (range) or driving on a wet road during a cold day (ext)... What is your info centre preference?

I quite often have it on range or fuel avg to prevent me from wasting fuel all the time.

However, I like to put it on fuel inst if my friends in the car to show off the wicked mpg when I boot it. Why does it stop at 11.1mpg?!

I have it on oil temperature, as the oil temperature is the best indication of how warm the engine is.
E.g. the water can be nearly up to operating temperature, but the oil will still show COLD.
An engine can be considered to be warm once it is above 70deg C oil temp

I keep it on range. Don't like to look at the MPG! My average at the moment is 25.7 which is quite good for me.

Most of the time mine is on 'fuel inst', but inbetween often toggle between 'oil' and 'engine' just checkin'
After cold start it's always on 'oil' at first, like chris1roll says, it's the best indication whether the engine reaches working temp.

N.B. I often notice that when slowing down and taking foot off the throttle, 'fuel inst' goes to zero and while standing still it slowly counts up again, sometimes up to 4.0 l/100km
Is this normal correct operation?
Could remember with former 480ies that it stays on zero until taking up, then it goes up to 25.5 l/100km max.

I have mine on oil - fuel inst/average don't report correctly on mine anymore, which is what I used to have it on.

When it's real cold in winter, I have it on ext temp just out of curiosity :)

They all have their uses at different times. A simple, elegant and functional instrument.

Or perhaps that should be dysfunctional  , they are a bugger when they go wonky....

Most of the time it's on oil, and sometimes engine. I do look at most of the other values from time to time.

It's on oil after starting the car, and when the oil temperature is raising I start using the turbo and put the info centre on range.

Oil temp on start-up, then mostly instant mpg. Do use all though.

90 % I have it on the engine and oil temp...agree, the oil temp shows the operation of the engine...while driving fast at the motorway i always have it on the engine temp....had bad experience on my turbo...the engine went up to 103..too much

Here too! Oil-position for me. Gives me a good indication of when the engine is warm enough to floor the pedal to the metal! :)

But once the engine is warm I somethimes play a little... Bit of current fuel consumption, seeing how much difference it makes at different speeds with the popups up or down, what outside temperature it is (and if the temperature sign on the edge of that building is giving a false reading ;) ). That sort of stuff :)
