The usual Pop-up problems

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

The usual Pop-up problems

Post by ChrisDK » Sat Sep 06, 2014 12:21 pm

Sorry if You have read about this a trillion times, but I need some advice here.

The problem seems to be that the pop-up don't pop up, leaving me with no lights. this is what I have tried so far

1: changed the headlamp control relay - no changes
2: changed or at least tried to change the head lamp control contact on the dashboard.
3: changed all fuses, just to be sure
4: wiggled about with the pop-up relay (with the bonnet microswitch disabled)
5: manually checked that the pop-up motor is not seized

Before the problem started, as long as the ignition was on - the parking lights would light no matter the position of the headlamp control contact. Now they only light in position two and three. Before the rear fog light would only work with the haedlamp control contact in position three, now the don't work, and the pop-up don't pop-up. I'm fussed about what the problem is ? could it be one or the other pop-up relay?? (and how do I check which one it is?)

Advice needed :)

Thx Chris

first Chris lets eliminate some of the problems step by step

1 check all fuses ( you have done this )

2 make sure the daylight driving lights are both ok

3 go to relay box and remove the tall popup relay now bridge the connection for each side . When bridged the popup on that side should go up and down.

then get back to me on your results .

The rear fog light problem can be easily solved , I had a major electric problem with the front and back foglights and solved it after about half a day .

1 open the rear hatch and remove the rear trim panel locate the connector for the rear fog light disconnect and connect to a multimeter set for voltage measurement turn on the rear fog light at the switch is there a voltage reading ?

If not you will need to alter some wires behind the triple switch but again let me know the result of your test.

A little update.

I felt a bit uncomfortable bridging the connections, so instead I replaced the tall popup relay, no changes, no pop-up

OK, so I bridged the connections. Yes there were sparks, but no fuses were harmed :)
the result: movement of the pop-up's so the motor works.

Now you lnow the problem lies further back up the circuitry. 2 relays wont be duff you have changed the rotary switch so I would now suspect the cem but let me think about it for a while as there is one more thing to try.....

Me thinks Jim's gone for a hammer!
"If you can't fix it with a hammer, it's an electrical fault!"
Hammers can't fix a 480!!!

Ahmm to be honest, I did not change the rotary switch, what happend is that I discovered that there are differenses from a LHD to RHD and in an attempt to modify the switch to fit a LHD, it kind of broke. This was one of these "don't do this at home" moments with little springs all over the dining room. A new one is on it's way but won't be here until sometime next week. Would it be an idea to try and bridge the rotary switch ?

So I'm Back. After three long weeks I finaly received a new rotary switch, it was delivered with snail mail :kill: however, it did not change annything. Still no pop-up. A couple of days ago I switched the CEM for an old one that I have lying around
(readers of my 480 thread will know that it's the one without working indicators) just to try. But that made no difference. so it dosn't seem to be the relay's, the rotary switch or the CEM so what is left to test?

No, still no rear fog lights. I can't remember if I already mentioned this, but before the DRL would automatically turn on, but today I manually have to turn the rotary switch to position 1 to get DRL light.

Hi Chris, I guess if you have to turn the rotary switch to get any DRLs, the 4 watt side of the bulbs are not lighting up. Not sure if that helps with the diagnosis but just sayin!
