headlight dying

Post by barnsleyGT » Sat Mar 10, 2007 9:29 pm

im having probs with my drivers side pop up. both work initially but after a short while the drivers side beam dies. fuse is ok, ive replaced the bulb twice and its still the same. as i use my lights now im watching the dash to see how long it lasts, i can see the orange warning light getting slowly stronger. rarely they both work.

any simple suggestions before i go the auto electrician appreciated.

Hmm it sounds tricky, check the earth points? It could be rust. What would cause it to die after getting warm (i guess thats why it dies)? or perhaps its jiggling?

I had both lights dying while driving, sounds more like a lose contact wire problem ?

This was my relais: http://volvo480.dragons.org.uk/forum/vi ... highlight=

The bulb warning light on a GT is only for the brake lights (not sure about on earlier cars), so losing a headlight shouldn't cause this to come on. When you turn the ignition on, the bulb warning light should illuminate, then go out as soon as you touch the brakes. Also, it should either be on or off, not glowing at different intensities. It sounds like a bad earth to me.

an update on the problem.

on a closer inspection the contact block had some corrosion. using a small flat head i cleaned it up and bent the metal in so as to get a connection and its working fine.

it will need replacing tho in the not too distant. anybody got a spare?

thanks for your suggestions tho.
