480 infocentre display help

Post by eyedee » Sun Mar 04, 2007 8:30 pm

Help.I own a 1993 480 ES manual. The info centre display keeps switching off and on : one minute it shows a range of 120 miles the next 30 and the fuel light flashes , I go round a roundabout at speed it flashes check , idicating it's low on oil (which it isn't). I was flying along at high speed the other day and it flashes stop and shows the overheat symbol . I had a diagnostic check which showed no electrical faults so we tried another info centre switch , this caused it to work normally for 30 miles then back to square one . The mileage recorder stopped so we fitted a new sender , still not working . so this week another dashboard . The miles now record but it still flashes off and on . My brain is seriously hurting now as is my pocket . All the Volvo people I know are baffled . If anyone can help I'd appreciate it . Also I'm interested in any tweeking to boost torque/power . I'm at present awaiting delivery of an electronic supercharger from the States. Think hard people . thanks, eyedee.

check the gray ribbon cable between the info centre and the switch. It had rubbed through one of the wires on my car.
Search on info centre there are a lot of threads about it and a lot of ideas for things you can try yourself that only take time.

good luck.

Check the brown wire with red striping on the connector of the radio. The connector dhould have two brown and red cables, one thicker than the other. The thinner wire feeds the info display. Mostly its the connection here that is causing problems.

Mine does the same, on mine there is a wire that runs from a clip on the alternator, it is on the side opposite the drive belt on the alternator. It is located at the top of the alternator and runs from there to a bunch o wires nearer the engine block . The actual metal tab on the alternator end is broken in mine it wobbles, a small wedge of wood jammed in there tight makes it work all the time....
