Right pop up intermittent

From CEM to VEM, from LED to lightbulb and more. If you have an electrical problem, like a broken info-centre, search for answers in this category. This is also the place to be when you expect the problem to be of an electrical nature...

Right pop up intermittent

Post by dan » Wed Sep 08, 2004 3:00 pm

Hi,
Had this problem for a couple of months. Left one goes up and down, right one either doesnt at all or occasionally decides to work in an intermittent..i.e. jerky fashion, more often than not stopping halfway.

Now l have replaced both dampers with brand new ones as was suggested at a recent meet, and the problem is exactly the same.

One clue is that the last time it worked in its jerky fashion (right after i fitted the new dampers) l'm sure l could hear the relay clicking more often and l believe in time with the jerks of the pop up. I cannot hear the motor working to pop the light up but obviously l do not want to keep trying as l might burn it out.

Does this mean the pop up relay (which l replaced 2-3 yrs ago) is actually the culprit. There are no other symptoms and the car is fine otherwise.

Where can l get one in Norfolk? The volvo parts place here moved to Portsmouth or something daft.

one of my popups did the sam: the cause was worn-out brushs of the position switch in the motor. i cleaned it and grease it and it worked. the motor itself is a bitch to take apart and even biger bitch to get it together..

Ack, looks like you are on the money.
Well taking the motor apart may be beyond my skills and/or patience. Replacing it might not be (with a scrap version, new is daft money).

You got any tips on removing the headlight unit with glass too l presume for a straight swap out?

yeah, four nuts and a gass spring and wiring.
all nuts are behind the light, reachable from the engine compartment. two on top, one under those 2 (hard to find) an 4th on bottom. unsrew those 4 and you get your lights out. good luck with the scrapie edition!
