rattling exhaust

Post by chrispaws13 » Fri Apr 08, 2005 12:20 pm

Was dropping my bird off wednesday night and heard a rattling from back box end of my exhaust so thursday after work done some investigation and its not loose or anything, all the mounts are fine it just sounds like somethings rattling around inside.?

Note this only happens when the car is running idle (just under 1000rpm) driving around or slightly putting ur foot on the gas and it stops.

Could it be pieces of the cat that have broken away and ended up the back box??

Could be parts of the cat or more likely the insides of the backbox have come loose, you can try hitting it with a rubber hammer a few times, if your lucky the rattling will stop.

Most likely your cat is fine and it's just the inside of your backbox that has come loose, it's not an empty tupe it has stuff inside it.

BTW don't get carried away with the hammer and hit your cat with it, that could break it, use your hand for that.

My 480 S has a rattling exhaust. I think the pipe may be rubbing up against the fuel tank guard.

And make sure you have a new clamp that connects the two pipes, the old ones are usually rusted pretty bad

Post by felyx » Sun Apr 10, 2005 8:34 am

the back boxes always rattle when the 2 rubbers wear out, you can fix this buy wedging something in between the rubber this always works, takes 5 mins really!!!!waste of time taking off back box.

cheers felyx.

p.s any (almost) tyre and exaughst place will fix this for free,£3 or a packet of biscuits.
140mph for £175 just test the brakes

Since i fitted 2x new 480 rubbers to the mid section of my exhaust I get a rattle when accelerating which sounds like the exhaust.

I dont have any ramps or any proper tools and I ended up fitting it by using a jack to lift it and a claw hammer to lever it (dont hate me!)

Its got 2x new rubbers on now tho - but it rattles. I will have to fix it. If I have broken my CAT I probably cant go on holliday :(

The man in the Garage says it would be better to put 340/60 rubbers on as they are smaller and dont fall of as easily - anyone else heard this?

Got to buy some ramps..... but my MOT last week cost £280 owch!

Hit your cat with your fist if it rattles its dead, a quick (perhaps temporary fix) take the cat out and emtpy it out by sticking a long screwdriver in it and hitting that with your favorite ;) clawhamer. When you got al the stuff out fit it back under the car. It's a good idea to screw out the lambda before you start poking the screwdriver in. you might damage it.

You don't need a lot of tools for this and its really easy, the hardest part is taking of the cat and that isn't that hard at all. I hope your not going to cancel your holiday becouse of it...

A good tip i've found if you are ever struggling with cat bolts, get the spanner over one of them and use a trolley jack under the other end of the spanner and jack it up to apply force... Saves me lots of aggro.

How bloody annoying. Been to three car places on my lunch break and none of them will cut the end of my exhaust off!
They are all like "we dont do that sort of thing" ummmmm!?
They probably just want me to pay for a whole new back box for the sake of a slightly rattling tail pipe which can easily be fixed by cutting a few inches off the end!!

Bought a hack-saw yesterday but it was a cheap crappy one and wasnt going through the metal for nobody!

Will have to ring my mechanic mate

Mah! my backbox rattled like a sod when I bought the car - the dealer had fitted a new backbox to get it through the MOT and his garage had done a bad job - wrong mounts or something... exhaust rattled against fuel tank heat shield. This officially sucked and mucked a hole in the pipe after a while!
Gun Gummed + the "rabbit-killer" bodged metal bracket to stop it all falling off to get through MOT!!

Got replaced four months ago - new one got fitted properly :)

Will post photos of the rabbit-killer when I get my webserver back up so you can see why it got the nickname - and why I should never be allowed to play with exhaust pipes...

The thing with mine is just the tail end of the tail pipe rattles and it simply needs cutting back a few inches!! Is that really a hard job for any garage!!

Just rang my dad to get searching for a hacksaw!!
