OK, there's no velcro on mine, it seems (by the feel of it) to be actually
bolted down under the center console, but I managed to pull it out from each side from under the door trims instead - under the carpet is the original polytyrene lump in the passenger well and a small poly lump under the clutch foot rest area. Under these and the rest of the pan is a foam/carpet underlay - I pulled this up and saw what my car would've looked like the day it ran out of Born :D - ANyway I digress - there is definately no sign of water/coolant anywhere on the floorpan in either the passenger or driver's footwells - I can't see this matrix thing you mention, but that's probably because I cant pull the carpet away far enough along the centre console - but I pushed my fingers underneath and had a good feel and I cannot detect any damp at all...

So I guess (is this a fair comment?) my matrix isn't leaking - so the lack of heat is almost certainly a duff thermostat, but what about the smell and the (now slight) fog that comes out of the vents (I guess the fog will return more when the thermostat works)? Took the opportunity to check the drain holes under the bonnet (I've been caught by these being blocked on previous 480s), but they are totally clear.

Where do I look next for the source of this bad smell (TCP/Hot electronics) and the off fog (and the misting windows of course, although this has also lessoned (again probably because of the thermostat)

Can anyone cure my paranoia? Bouncing off my wet floor well thread....
My wet footwell happened overnight in the rain and my relay cover was loose. My heater works fine getting really hot on max setting and no visible water coming in.

Do you think it was just my dumbass leaving the relay cover lose?

I haven't parked uphil since in case but might be worth a try.

Incidentally for all those wit wet floors....make sure you dry the foam under the carpet. The carpet was dry but the foam soaking after my mobile swimming pool experience!!

Cheers

John

THERMOSTAT AND THINGS

Post by C6REW » Thu Nov 06, 2003 7:24 pm

Hi Gaz,

In a car with Aircon if you switch the aircon off you will notice that you get a bit and sometimes a lot of mist. My guess is that your fog will be based on this as the aircon will not be working correctly with a possible thermostat problem.

The smell could also be due to the aircon which can have lots of nasty bugs in it if not looked after correctly.

Whilst all this may be a load of codswallop my guess is the thermostat is a good bet for a weekend job and as mentioned above a low cost one at that.

Regards

Chris

CODSWALLOP

Post by C6REW » Thu Nov 06, 2003 9:42 pm

Ooops!

Told you it could be a load of codswallop.

Gaz, I thought your car was a GT and the AC was standard. Shows how much I know about our cars.

Well I have just bought about four brochures off Ebay so will have to study them in depth.

Back to your problem I still feel the thermostat could be the problem, but not so sure now.

Regards

Chris

Well, even though there's no water in the floorpan, there MUST be a leak somewhere - popped out to the Post Office at lunch and on my way back, I glanced down and my car is flashing red and shouting STOP! - engine temp at 115 degrees! Pulled over and opened the expansion tank, which was empty - water flooded into it and bubbled but then disappeared again - waited for it to cool to 100 degrees and drove it slowly to the nearest petrol station for a top up - mustr have taken about 3/4 - 1 litre of water in. As I filled, I listened for any sign of steam rising indicating leaks at a hot section. Nothing. Looked under for signs of leaks in the engine compartment... nothing... Going to book it in with Volvo shortly I think...

Hmmm, since filling the water, the heater now works again, although I;'m still not sure it's as hot as it should be - the windows now steam up loads when I switch it to warm again, and the smell of TCP is as strong as it was when it first started (I filled up with water only, no extra coolant) - Car is booked into Volvo on Tuesday - I REALLY don't want to take it there if I can help it, so what last ditch things can I do to try and trace the fault myself?
