Gear box oil
I want to change the oil in my manual gearbox of my 1993 480, the manual recommends Duckhams 75w/90s but just wondered whether anyone can recommend a modern suitable alternative ? thank you

Re: Gear box oil
The manual for my car says use Volvo oil with part number 3343922-5
There's a few discussions on this on the forums, saying that this oil has been superseded by #1161681
A search on that gives...
http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts/ac ... w/1022457/
which is a 75W/80 GL5 oil
I've never seen a recommendation for a 75/90 but some of the 850/x70 T5 guys use it in their M56 boxes. Best to use what is recommended in the manual tbh, if you can. It's not just about viscosity there can be material compatibility considerations also. I just try to get the best I can afford...which is not always the best..

Re: Gear box oil
Always use the Volvo stuff if you can.
Cheaper brands have additives which can cause the bronze components within the gearbox to rot.
I also used Millers TRX Synthetic, which also does not have any bronze-rot chemicals.

Stephen

Yes, what these people said.
I'd recommend going to Volvo.
