Emisions MOT failure

Post by glasgowjim » Sat Jul 04, 2009 11:25 am

Failed on everything !!!!

Fast idle Fail on CO HC and lambda

CO 7.398 when max value is 0.3
HC 454 when max value is 200
LAMBDA 0.817 when range is 0.960 to 1.040

Second fast idle
CO 7.413
HC 462
lambda 0.817

natural idle
CO 7.516

Any suggestions folk (except scrap / break or burn). Will be replacing CV gaiter , link bar and back box this weekend an then checking the lambda. Still have all the spares I need to do the job.

also
got advisory 2 front hub caps missing
advise low washer fluid warning light on
nail in rear tyre
garage has gone mad on advisories totalling 29 !!! but they do mot's for £14.99.

is the heater fuse ok in the lambda sensor jim .i have read you can check the lambda on a bench with a lit blowtorch. only other thoughts is mucky injector(s) uneven flow rates.i swear by bg44k cleaner.i would rule out ignition problems though as the hydrocarbons are accompanied by high co i would guess its burning all its oxygen .

Hi Jim,

I also had an MOT fail today :(

I don't know how to sort out your emissions but just letting you know you're not the only one running around doing repairs today!

Failed on front brake hose (shop sold me the wrong one today), short circuit in rear cluster (fixed), windscreen wipers (replaced) and some other advisories which dont worry me.

I too went for a cheap MOT (£26) and the guy was seriously thorough!

Good luck,

pol

Also check and clean the eyelet of the ECU earth at the engine hoist point. I had very bad emissions too that seems to have been caused by this bad earth. In my case the connection of the eyelet to the cable was corroded very bad. I've put a new eyelet on the cable. I think the high resistance in the earth connection will give false readings of sensors, like the lambda. The lambda voltage received by the ECU will then be lower than the real value, and might indicate lean instead of stoicheometric or rich. And after all, cleaning an earth point is always good and almost no work.
