½" - 1" Gearstick Movement - Worn Engine Mounts?
I noticed today that when I accelerate hard or take my off the accelerator quickly, whichever gear I'm in, if I hold my hand loosely round the gearstick, I can feel it move back/forward between ½" and 1". Is this an indication that I could have a worn engine mount(s?), presumably on the right hand side of the engine, near the gearbox?
If this is the case, it might also indicated why I sometimes have difficulty getting into 1st gear, although a pump of the clutch and giving it a few small revs usually fixes it. I assumed this was probably the synchromesh on it's way out, although I also read somewhere that it could be to do with the quality of the oil in the gearbox (not sure what's in there - I haven't had it changed yet in the short while I've had the car). Oh, and the clutch is adjusted fine, as I've checked that.
I know that the 480's gearbox is anywhere near as refined as can be found on most Japanese cars, but if this is something that happens on all of them, I can stop worrying!

yep
both mine have moved like that, although maybe not by an inch, but it could just be the bushes on the lever?
As for getting into first, the gearbox will not let you engage first until you are virtually stoppped, so coming up to a junction you may find it won't go in... I don't think that pumping the clutch should make much difference a sit is a cable system, and pumping them is for hydraulic ones to get pressure in it. the revving may help if your slowing down to a junction as it will match the engine speed to the movement of the car.... this is my theorising about it... think its right, anyone else care to agree or disagree?

I've got a picture of a part which I need to replace to try and tighten up the gearstick movement, that was sent to me by Gerrsvolvo a short while a go. I haven't got round to doing it yet, and once I remember to stick a cheque in the post to DragonLord so he can send me a couple of "blank CD coasters", I'll find the part number and replace it. Maybe that'll solve both issues at the same time!

wobbliness (mine has this) and trouble into certain gears (mine doesnt do this but both my last 2 did) sounds to me more like worn linkages than engine mounts, aparently this is cheap to repair, but I could be wrong
