Turbo pressure running rampage.

Post by CRKrogh » Wed Aug 09, 2006 5:55 am

Hi, guys. Well, yesterday nothing wrong, today when I hit the freeway to work, turbo pressure builds up to between .8 and 1, then the engine feels like cutting ignition for a fraction of a second.
If I let off the accelerator it feels fine.
Where should I start looking when I get home???

either the black or the red hose between the boost solenoid bolted to the bulkhead and the turbocharger outlet/wastegate actuator will have snapped/split...goes like a rocket though eh? for about 2 secs....

This solenoid, is it the black block with a tube going in at the top, a couple at the bottom and a connector?
 I'm going on memory here, as the car obviously is in the company garage.

I will take a look when I get off today. Sounds like a minor thing.
I was fortunate enough to find this little gem in jan. 06. with only 120.0Km, in mint condition - just had to own it!

Are you running a chipped ECU ? Cause I think all above 0.8 isn't normal for a standard turbo and it could be your chip limiting your pressure and stalling your engine for safety reasons ...

... to all : correct me if wrong ...

My brother had this once in his 440 turbo. He exited a roundabout and floored it in 2nd gear. The car (standard ecu) boosted upto and beyond the red before the engine cut out.

It turned out there was a stone stuck in the wastegate actuator. He said the car was damn quick though, the engine was able to restart before any of the traffic behind him could catch up!

Problem solved!

Post by CRKrogh » Thu Aug 10, 2006 5:49 am

Hi, all.
It was the top hose for the wastegate solenoid. The load on the connecting tip broke it. I have made a temporary fix by joyning a suitable piece of piping to form a new connecting tip until I can get a new solenoid. Works like a charm. :D
Thank you all for input!

Hi all,

With this boost solenoid, is it possible that when it is broken the car starts stuttering when lifting throttle? Mine does this and for some reason I think the boost solenoid is the cause.

I also noticed that something on the car sometimes gives a small bang. don't know if it is this solenoid that gets stuck and because of the pressure suddenly opens with a bang, or that it is something else. I must mention that I am running turbopressure up to 1 bar (end of the red).
Full throttle is no problem at all, the power sometimes scares me ;-).

I would realy like this to be fixed while at the moment I have to drive the car with great tenderness wich untill now was never needed.
I know, by the way, I always have to treat the 480 with tenderness  .

Greets,
