uber urgent enquiry possible engine fooked
Last night in dark and rain checked the oil damn near dry so topped up and I overdid it. 24 hours later son drives back with a huge cloud of blue gray smoke from exhaust and lack of power . Have I fooked my piston rings?
No water / mayonaise on oil cap.
If I have then can you remove the pistons without removing the engine , by dropping the sump when car front up on front car ramps raised a foot off ground.
So I would need only to get ring compressors to fit new piston rings and I would be back on road. Or is there more to this than that? Is there likely to be other damage.
If I cant get at the pistons from underneath then I suppose I would have to remove engine to get at he piston rings so now I would need a hoist!
Would I be better off taking a shotgun to the car now?
Shooting the wife ?
Or getting a brain transplant for being such a retard

Haven't had this myself before (I'm not a retard ) I would imagine that other parts than piston rings will give way first if the pressure there gets to high due to too much oil. Maybe an oil seal? Maybe you can check such things first? Although it may not explain the smoke from the exhaust. Or the oil seperator at the crank case ventilation?

That's a lot of money if you need to do all 4 pistons. Do you want to do all the pistons or the one you think is broken? But I still don't get why you're so sure that you've killed the piston rings on one or more pistons?
How much oil did you add above the maximum? And if, for example, a reasonable amount of oil will enter the cilinder(s) at once (let say through the crankcase ventilation) , this will cover the sparkplug(s) and may cause lack of power.
Maybe you have checked everything already, but in you're post you only describe the worst case scenario without ruling out any other option. It might be not that bad

Hi Jim,
in reply to your PM.
Never done it on a 2lt but its going to be the same as a turbo so...
Remove the inlet manifold / exhaust
remove the head
remove the sump
undo the bolts holding the con rods to the crank and remove and number the parts which come off
get a wood hammer handle and knock the pistons out the top of block and get someone to catch them.
One looking like this... you can knock them out.
Fun Fun Fun!
The worst part is getting the sump to seal up again lol
Your need a piston ring compressor also. I got one you can borrow if you need it.

Progress so far;-
bought compression tester
drained engine oil
tossed contaminated air filter removed the inlet manifold / idv / oil air breather cleaned up pipes and tubing and spark plugs.
tomorrow will reassemble and see if the rings are intact and its something else (fingers crossed )
but if it does not make any difference then compression testing it is!

well intake reassembled and very little smoke but still its there so out with the compression tester and go for a short run first came back and did the compression testing....
cylinder plug compression in psi
4 dry 132
3 dry 133
2 dry 137
1 dry 135
so I think the pison rings have survived he smoke has almost gone and the litle flecks of oil from exhaust is the residue of the oil still in system.
I am a smiling retard again.

Good to hear that it isn't as bad as you first thought. I recognise it when something happens to my car, I also first think of the worst that might have happened. For some reason it's easier to think logical about problems of someone else's car
I'm wondering how much oil did you had in the system to cause all this?
