Pulling my hair out - idle probs & lack of power

All the information you need on engine-problems is here. The engine includes the Turbo-charger, airco and everything else you'll find under the bonnet.

But did you do the check on the tps as I adviced earlier on in this thread?
right gotta re-read Iroll, thought I had but I'm losin on this! LOL

Thanks JT, that'll be the one on the back of the block then?

I'm testing the one on the front next to No1 spark-plug near to dizzy.

Iroll, thanks for that, re-reading in a mo'.
BTW, in answer to your questions

Air filter is new, well 2 or three months old to be exact.

Crankcase vent - yep, I replaced that foam covered canister thing (near to idle valve) with one from manistealer last year, pipes were clear. The old cannister had a hole twice the size it should have had where it fits on, so had been busted at some stage. I think that is the crank case vent stuff?

I don't think it has ever been in 'get me home' as it always starts, hot or cold with same time spinning on the starter before it fires. Never misses on that score (save for when I've cocked something up!).

Right of t re-read the tps stuff, looks as if I may have over looked that bit, as I said, I'm starting to lose the plot now!

Hi All.

Had another look at things today. Plugs still okay. Car is running well. Pulls well etc. However still at 23.7 mpg.

TPS appears okay, following the useful linky on earlier post.

Re-checked Coolant temp sensor. Engine Cold, (Tester at 20k) got reading of 8.73 (does that mean 8730? )

At 80Degrees got .45 (450?).

Is this acceptable?

Used the diagnostic box again Got a 1:1:1: :hopping: So no snags there then?

For info, on mine it only has three connectors in positions 3, 5, & 7.

Now, this was funny.
Whilst in test mode with ignition on. The following happened in this order

1) C/locking, locked then unlocked itself
2) Horn blipped (nearly jumped out of my skin
3) Drivers door went down a couple of inches
4) Front wipers did one sweep
5) Windscreen wash squirted

Bizzare.

Seems to me the coolant sensor is ok. When it is malfuctioning it would have had a fixed resistance or very little variable resistance at different temps.

The turbo's don''t have a socket #2 to diagnose fuel injection/ecu problems.

This is the test sequence of the CEM at socket#5. If you push the little knob 1x it will read you the stored fault codes. Push it 2x it will do a sequence on the incoming signals, push it 3x it will check the outgoing signals by activating the systems as you discribed for 3-4 sec each.

Hi Iroll.

Thanks once again, I'm learning all the time here.

So as I got a 1:1:1, if I'm right that says no codes stored. Then it did its test-mode.

I THINK I'm making some headway, as the plugs have still not sooted up. Thats 2 weeks now. So Lambda change seems to have solved that. Infact the plugs have a smidge of a yellowy residue on them now?

Went for a spin yesterday & it was going like a rocket should. Tickover seemed smooth too

Economy is still at 23.7 though. :cryhard:

dont rely on the on board computer fill tank and calculate manually and then check with computer readout.

Thanks once again GJ. Its defo well down on fuel as is needing a fill-up once in wifeys working week as opposed to previously lasting nearly two of her 'work weeks'.

I will do a fill-up 'test though. Also gonna do that comp' test.

However I made a command decision last night. The 480 is going to go! Next September, I have a small 'payout' heading my way. I'm going to grab a late 940 est, to sit alongside my aging 240. We'll have three dogs by then & will be travelling to doggie-agility competions, so two estates will give us a 'back up' car should one fail.

3 dogs plus kit into the 480

May I say a heart-felt thankyou to all who have 'put-up' with my ramblings on this thread. The car is performing well still and plugs are into the second week without needing cleaning. So with your help I've deffinately made some progress. Fuel economy? Well I'll live with that for the time being. I reckon its high time that this thread is allowed to 'slip away'.
